The clues for me were the bits of yellow already in the room - the pillow and the flowers - that suggested there was going to be more :-)

My thoughts:
1) Turn the bed to face the window and center it along the window wall, leaving enough room for airflow around the radiator. Either replace the headboard with one a bit taller, and place your sofa so it backs against the headboard, or use expedit - again, up against the headboard - to create a room divider (and storage!) Either way, that will leave you with a living/dining area of approx 14' x 12' - very useable.
2) Use a trunk or other storage piece as a coffee table. Get underbed storage containers for more storage.
3) You've got a fair amount of closet space - trick them out with Elfa shelving to maximize every inch of your closets.

quick google search came up with this:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2075241_remove-black-mold.html

however, please note that they describe black mold as "very toxic and can cause sickness..." and its spores can easily become airborne, causing more damage. it sounds to me that, depending on the extent of the mold, this might not be something you want to tackle yourself, and may cause your apartment to be considered unliveable.

I'd be very careful, especially if you (or anyone else in your household) has allergies or asthma.

Considering you have dogs that shed and track dirt, here's my $.02:

1) as others have said, don't go with any sort of grass-type fiber (jute, sisal, etc.), even blended with wool. They absorb liquids, and one dog barf, rainy muddy day, spilled cup of coffee, even water stains, will likely ruin the rug. We had sisal rugs for a few years, and within the first 2 years, they looked like hell (we have a dog that barfs occasionally and likes mud - what dog doesn't?)

2) Go with a pattern, not a solid color - patterns will hide the dog hair and dirt better than a solid rug. I'd also take a look at patterns that incorporate the burgundy as a secondary color to help tie everything together, with a neutral primary color.

3) seriously consider flor tiles. We're switching over to them ourselves - they're so easy to clean, most of the patterns are nylon, so stains don't absorb; they're recyclable; you can replace a single tile at a time if you need to. Take a look at: milliner in brown, or for all-neutral palettes, line please, lacebark, morning coffee, sound check, etc.

sorry - that would be "'way' too hard." Another example of "trying way too hard to be clever" is the organizing books by color. Why is this considered so "clever"? So overdone, and each time seems to be considered so innovative. Please. It really only says "I bought boxes of books at a flea market in order to fill shelf space."

curious definition of "best" - image #1 (the round bookcase) was universally panned (and deservedly so IMHO) for being utterly unsuitable to storing books. jamming books into such a bookcase would seriously damage the books. trying *way* to hard to be clever with this one.

The photos tell next-to-nothing about the layout of the room - without a sketch, including dimensions and placement of all windows and doors, layout suggestions are meaningless.

As for what colors to use - assuming you like the sofa fabric - the most obvious approach is to pull colors from the fabric pattern, and there's plenty to choose from. However, I have to agree with @k & k colour - get a slipcover.

Curious about the insulation options for the ceiling/roof - is there space between the beams and the roof to install insulation, or would you have to cover up the wood ceiling and are currently doing without? I've seen homes with similar wood ceilings, and have always wondered.

It's hard to tell without any dimensions, but what you'll want to do is set up different zones - living, dining, sleeping within the space. To set apart your sleeping area, use a piece of furniture such as a bookcase or armoire (ideally, wider than the headboard of your bed) to create a freestanding wall you can set your bed against. I'm picturing placing the bed facing the closet and bathroom area, with the divider perpendicular to the kitchen wall.

That way, you'll have living space on one side of the "wall" and sleeping space (and a bit of privacy) on the other side, with some bonus storage space.
