We love the floor bed - our daughter started out in a co-Sleeper (which we never used as intended - just as a crib) but moved her to an Ikea 3" mattress on the floor at 7 months. We didn't use it for co-sleeping (she's slept in her own room since she was 2 weeks). A couple things that help make the floor bed work: (i) carpet around the bed so if she rolls off - which happened a couple times early on - it's not too hard; (ii) a door that closes, for obvious reasons; and (iii) not too much furniture/stuff in the bedroom.

Also, keep bedtime very minimalist. For us, it's no books/games/songs or other things that keep your child up - we turn the lights down, sit on the bed together with a bottle, and then get up and leave the room once she's done with the bottle (she's 2 yrs old now so there's not much bottle drinking going on - it's more just the routine). I don't talk much or engage her attention at all. She usually goes from a hyper 2-year old, running around and climbing on things, to a very calm mellow little child with droopy eyes.
