Thank you all for your comments! I tend to agree with Laura2450: I don't think it is a Danish chair and the Yougoslavian/Italian/European suggestion seems more plausible to me (judging by the type of wood and seat wire) but I still haven't found the exact same one anywhere else.
To answer some questions: I live in Boston and the chair was thrown away by (I think) an elderly neighbor... This is the second time in a year that I see a nice mid-century chair on the sidewalk near my house -- clearly my neighbors do not have a sense that some people actually LOVE this kind of furniture. And people are wasteful in my neighborhood: I could have furnished an entire house with items thrown in the trash these past years. And yes, Emmelemm, I reupholstered with a (cheap) piece of Maharam fabric found on www.newtoto.com. I figured that if I did not like the result, I could always sell it on CL - I did not spent much. I like the result (visually), but a) it is not very comfy and B) my husband doesn't love it. I am still thinking about it and you may find it on Boston CL one day. For me, the fun is to salvage/recycle/transform, but I do not need more furniture. VoilĂ !
