PACK A MAP! Circle where you live and mark down any an all places you'll need to go for everyday errands/shopping (ie laundromat, post office, grocery store, library...). This will help you feel confident roaming around your new neighborhood before you get a smartphone. It will also help in asking for directions in a country where there might be a language barrier.

AP posted something about Popham tiles not too long ago. I love their designs so much, and am eager to buy a home just to install some of them myself! I'm not sure what the price points are, but they're so lovely and full of character it might not matter, especially in a small bathroom. I think some of the designs, in any of the the several muted pinks and greens available, could both compliment your 50's ranch, as well as stand out as conversation piece.
