I too can not pass up a beautiful scarf when shopping, and I JUST conquered this problem at my own new apartment using a cheap, pretty towel rack+rod combo from Target (similar to this one from Walmart, but w/ only one rod below http://www.walmart.com/ip/Whitmor-Chrome-Towel-Rack-with-Shelf/16523691)

ANYWAYS: I use the rods which make the shelf on top to loop my scarves around and through, and use S-hooks (actually, shower curtain hooks) on the rod at the bottom to store belts and some of my heavier, longer necklaces. It displays really beautifully between my bathroom door and closet, wish I had a picture to show you b/c it turned out so well.

I have also seen/heard of using over-the-door shoe organizers with clear pockets to display any number of things: scarves, toiletries, jewelry, you name it.

There are a billion options out there as far as shelves go, but if you're looking for an actual way to manage your collection I agree that EndNote is a good option, but there are also some cheap, efficient home book scanners you can use to catalog your library. http://www.collectorz.com/book/barcode-scanner.php I know the CueCat works really well, but you might also like the simplicity of a phone app. Most programs will also allow you to record WHERE each book is stored in your collection, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.
