I agree with the nuts...buy an assortment and keep them in the freezer, keeps them nice and fresh. Some good cured meats, they should last you a good while in the fridge also the dried fruits always goes well. Things that you can always have on hand and not worry too much about them going bad. That way all you would have to do is just pick up some good cheese if you want to. A safe all around crowd pleaser is a good aged cheddar! My first thought was bright yellow as well....But I also like the idea of high gloss black (or navy). Personally turquoise - any shade - is my favorite color and always makes me happy, so I would consider that as well! one of my guilty pleasures for a long time (since my dad first made it for me as a kid) is an aged cheddar on buttered toast with berry jam. I second the fresh herbs and the garlic. I almost always have parsley, rosemary, basil and thyme. I wanted to add some good stock the the list! Whenever I see it go on sale I will grab a few for the pantry. Let's be honest...we're not always making our own as much as we'd like to. Just made these to take as a hostess gift along with some roquefort for a friend who is a lover of a good stinky cheese. I thought it was worth noting that the 'batter' as it is referred to in the recipe is much more of a dry and crumbly mixture. It can be formed into shape for the cookies though.
