@anthonyn: I believe that is the average price, yeah. I got them for $124 actually, so they've come down a teeny bit. They're great - once you calibrate them for the weight of your monitor you don't have to tweak anything, they have a pretty great range of motion, and you can rotate the monitors.

I usually spend 12 hours a day in front of my monitors and reconfigure/rotate them for different purposes, so the MX's were totally worth it for me. Your mileage may vary.

Seems like something I would have loved as a child, but it also seems like changing the sheets would be quite a hassle.

When you mentioned earbuds designed for women, especially combined with that statement about research they did, I thought that these earbuds would have a slightly different frequency range/profile and perhaps be smaller for smaller ear canals. I find myself disappointed by the lack of substance.

I'm also curious - what defines home decor or a piece of furniture as either masculine or feminine?

When I think of a "masculine" room I think chesterfield sofa, taxedermy, cigars, and snifters of brandy (I got this by reading about British gentlemen's clubs). But obviously, modern boxy sofas doesn't really fit into that picture. When I read descriptions of rooms or furniture as "feminine" I don't know what images that term is supposed to evoke.

Is there no good way to get into that space underneath the stairs to clean and dust (without banging around awkwardly with a long-handled broom)?

Also, it seems like anything that falls back there would be a pain to get out, again involving much poking and scraping with a long stick in between each stair tread.

I was a weird kid. I had a 8x10 picture of a the bust of Julius Caesar (bought from a museum gift shop), postcards of random Egyptian artifacts (also from the museum), a map of Alexander the Great's empire that I copied from a book onto a piece posterboard, a poster of Lord of the Rings (this was way before the movies, so it the one painted by Jimmy Cauty), and a giant poster of a unicorn (my only girly obsession).

Apartmenttherapy posters would approve of the rest of my room though. My parents got most of my furniture second-hand except for my bed, which had a bookshelf headboard type thing. I never noticed the furniture - it was utilitarian, which was all I cared about. The nesting instinct or whatever I seem have now that causes me to read apartmenttherapy.com is relatively new. ;)

If I were the kid I'd move the bed for fear it falling and crushing me while I sleep.

I have the same type of balcony. I managed to fit a small greenhouse out there, and many planters and such. But as I live much higher up, gusts of wind would overturn my planters and even blew over my greenhouse once or twice. Fearful that things would fall apart, blow off the balcony, and kill someone below, I had to remove everything from my balcony. =/

If you only live on the second floor then this may not be much of a problem for you, and a small greenhouse would probably fit. I got one about 6" tall, 2-3" wide (hence fits in the space between my two sliding glass doors), and about 1-1.5" deep.

Actually they've been doing this for over a year. Cambridge residents can also pick up some limited amount the resultant compost.
