Come on Apartment Therapy people - this is about sharing ideas and information - not telling people what's right or wrong. I think the post is great. The author floats good ideas and thoughts and we can choose whether that works for us. I was working with a client the other day on decluttering her home, which ended up being decluttering her heart too. Sentimental items. I gave her lots of tools and tips - we discussed the reason why she had so many of some things and on that day she took one wee little baby step forward.
The next day I had a client who just filled a bin with her stuff without a blink of an eye. I celebrate the difference in everyone.
I have one daughter who is OCD, one who keeps everything and another who is indifferent. I don't have alot of linen but do love nice glasses. I look at the world that we are all grown up and hearing how others approach their lives is enriching for all of us. I don't take this post as criticism, I take it as enlightenment. Thank you.

Getting Organized: The Big Picture

I'm from Melbourne, live in Melbourne, love Melbourne. But I'm well travelled and many of those other countries are just gorgeous too. In Australia, we regard Canadians as our Northern Hemisphere sisters and I see that both of us did well in the Top 10. Maybe that's why I so many friends living in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver now.

I work with people on clutter all the time. Everyone has different ideas about clutter. Most people come to be and tell me they are a hoarder but they never are.
Clutter isn't about being neat for me but it is for others. My idea of clutter is different to what someone elses would be.
My motto is "if you love it and it brings you joy, keep it" and this seems to work well most of the time.
I don't believe there is a one size fits all solution but I do believe lots of tips, ideas, discussion and reflection is a good path to take.

Great comments everyone. I teach people how to declutter and reckon a combination of many of your comments are right. I personally use Drop Box and Evernote but see more and more clever ideas weekly on how to manage paper. My only tip is to create a system that does actually make life easier and simpler but also a system you know you'll use otherwise there's no point!

Sensational idea. You could even put artwork on one side and rotate it to change the mood of a room. I know a few people poo poo this idea but it's just something a little different than boring plaster walls.

As an author, I love books. My idea of heaven is going to a bookshop and immersing myself for hours. BUT I've come to culling my book collection, particularly on novels. There are of course, some books that you just know you need to keep. Having reduced my collection by 50% I'll sit with that for a while and see how it goes. Then in 6 months, revisit the collection again and see if there's more than can go.

Is it about too much stuff? Is it about filling the void in your life with stuff? It's complex and I agree with many readers that people are quick to say 'I'm a hoarder' OR 'my mother is a hoarder'. As someone who works with people around their clutter I've only ever come across a true hoarder once, and I referred them to a professional therapist. It's out of the realm of most of us to deal with people in those situations.
As for clutter and reducing the stuff in your home - so many people want to, like the idea but just can't take the steps forward. My biggest tip is to take small steps towards reducing things. This nearly always proves to be the most successful strategies for people with alot of stuff to get rid of.

I'm going to make one of these and put along the walking path in our town. It's such a lovely idea. It's an extension of the bookcrossing concept.

Great ideas. I take photos all the time to prompt and remind me. My girlfriend wrote some notes in her Iphone, then took a photo of them with my Iphone so I could remember. She could've sent them to me via email but thought this was a better way.
I also keep my bank account number in my phone because I'm always needing that.
Love all the different ways people use their phone for storing important information.
