i have to second the recommendation for mint.com By FAR the best and easiest way of tracking spending and saving, with no pen, paper or complicated excel sheets needed. and more than just spending, i have my retirement accounts, kids' college funds, and other investments tied into it as well, so i can always see where i stand. the categories are completely customizable to your own situation and you're not even tied to the same categories every month (i.e. my "lawn and garden" category gets added around this time of year, but goes away in the fall/winter). i try to pass it along to everyone i know. plus, it's free!
