i just did something like this the other night. our toddler is opening a new felt ornament each day for advent, squealing "oh wow!" and running over to place it (as close as humanly possible) by the other ornaments. it's awesome :) Make A Toddler-Friendly Felt Christmas Tree Johnny In A Dress |

the day after we moved into our apartment, 10 or so kids came racing up the driveway and dispersed throughout our back yard playing. my partner and i stood in the kitchen dumbfounded. we went outside and said hello, at which point we were informed that this was THE yard to play in on the block. the tenants before us had kids the age of the neighborhood kids and over the years the neighborhood kids had come to see this swath of green are *theirs*. we talked about it (we had two major concerns: 1. a kid getting hurt on our property and 2. wanting to be able to spend some quiet time out there uninterrupted...it was, after all, part of why we'd moved into this particular house) and decided to just go with it. nearly 2 years later, i have to say our lives are richer for being the place the neighbor kids play and also that it made our transition into the neighborhood go much more quickly. the wall re-plasterer was supposed to come wednesday at 2:30. at 3:30 we called and were told he couldn't make it but that he'd be by thursday at 2:30. on thursday we called at 3:30 and were told he couldn't make it (even though we'd called at 9 am to confirm he was coming and he'd said yes). he said he'd be here friday and, 2 hours after our scheduled appointment, he showed up. he told us he'd be back saturday to finish--and even left his tools!--but saturday he was a no show and didn't answer his phone. i just spoke to his boss and his boss told me that maybe he'd be by this afternoon, but then again, maybe he won't be able to make it until tomorrow. i've been doing this for the past few weeks with our one year old and getting busted on nightly by my partner. vindication tastes so, so sweet (as does watching your kid devour vegetables). Sorting By Color Is Not Just For Books |

the mobile is nice. the room's a bit bland for a kid in my opinion, though. not really seeing how the walls were such a leap away from their color comfort zone. Piper's Cubby Smaller Cooler 2011 Entry #23 |
