@loveyhowell: YIKES! Don't mix bleach and vinegar! Together, they create chlorine gas, which is toxic. Besides, vinegar and bleach are both acids, so one wouldn't neutralize the other.

I really, really try to look past errors in spelling and grammar because I know you folks post a lot. I can't, however, get over the use of apostrophes to indicate plurality.

It's atlases and thesauri or thesauruses.

That said, I'm grateful for this post. I'll definitely be adding some of these to my wish list. Thanks!

Blogger Lang Cook (Fat of the Land) has a bunch of recipes for nettles. Haven't tried them, but most look worth trying.

If you're just worried about them being a nuisance, you can use fly paper/tape or those yellow sticky tabs - sold in garden supply stores - the color is supposed to be attractive to flying insects. While not the most attractive thing to have around, they certainly do the job without resorting to harsh chemicals.

This debunks the "all Al foil is recycled" myth:

http://agmetalminer.com/2009/04/30/greenwashing-and-eco-friendly-metals/

Full-disclosure: I don't know anything about the source. That said, I do know (from running gas chromatographic trials myself) that Al foil is almost completely made up of aluminum, which backs up at least part of agmetalminer's claim.

This is a really disappointing post.

First off, if you click the link, you still need to search around for the list.

More importantly: the pets listed aren't all considered eco-friendly. In fact, the only information spring.com gives (other than mitigating tips for the last several animals) is how resource-intensive those particular pets are.

As a biologist, I have to respectfully disagree with Michelle of Montreal.

Yes, the mutation of viruses is natural and normal. However, this occurs most rapidly in close quarters. The reason for this is that the virus can infect more animals more rapidly. The more frequently the virus "jumps" from host to host, the more it mutates. (Viruses can't replicate on their own, they must use the cellular machinery of infected hosts. In fact, every time a virus replicates, it mutates by integrating some of the host's genes into the "offspring" viruses.)

Large-scale farms necessarily have more animals than small-scale operations. They also tend to have a higher concentration of animals. These are ideal "breeding grounds" for viruses.

In any case, this is neither here nor there. Thanks to Faith for posting this entry!

I used to volunteer for a bird rescue center where I learned the baby bird rejection thing is a total myth. Birds have almost no sense of smell, so will not generally reject a chick that is replaced in its proper nest.

It's important to note that if the chick is feathered, it may just have been pushed out of the nest to force it to fly. (The fledglings of many species actually spend their first few days out of the nest on the ground before they get the hang of flying.)

Long story short: if you know that a chick has fallen out of its nest and you can safely replace it, you should do so, as that is its best chance for its survival.

We use it in our home, but it's definitely harder to reuse because it's a bit thinner and tears rather easily. Because of this, we've largely transitioned to using containers with reusable lids.

We put some lamps on timers so they turn on a little before we arrive from work. This circumvents (at least some of) the wasteful energy concerns, while also providing that welcoming light home.
