For me, this is what Apartment Therapy is all about, proving the point that more is NOT always more. Great use of space. Perfectly picked furnishings (LOVE the coffee table on wheels. LOVE how chic and high-end even the Ikea pieces look.) Great style. Great home.

Are we voting for something here? Because if we are, this wins first prize, whatever it is. Xo.

Obsessed with wrapping pipes with twine, though I always worry it will end up looking too nautical. But every time I see it I think it looks so great and chic and smart.

Long story short: love love love the staircase.

I have this theory that you can complete any space with 5 easy pieces: A plug in sconce, a tray, a throw, some natural shades and something living (I've been writing about it HERE all week). It's all about texture and warmth, and I think this would work well for your issue. Flank the bed with two sconces (plug in so they don't need the labor of being hard-wired) a white lacquer or silver tray to hold the crap on the bed side table, a big warm chunky throw over the base of the bed, I can't see what your windows are to suggest treatments, but maybe a big heavy vase on the floor with some tall pussy willows... something to give depth and interest. I think this would answer your needs. Good luck.

THESE are becoming as ubiquitous as the molded chairs but I think they work well with blending country and a more modern look. The "real" ones at DWR are twice as $$ and I think these are much nicer. I like the white with the wood base... Good luck!

Hysterical timing! I just posted this amazing LEGO HACK (from IkeaHacker) Though it hardly has any of the LACK left... still a stunner, no?

Hmmm... funny question as it seems to only relate to specific neighborhoods (as others have said) obvs, if you live in San Francisco, it can done (and maybe the argument could be made that it SHOULD be) but if you lived in Connecticut and painted your house violet or pink, you'd really seem, well, selfish is the only word I can think of.

When I lived in LA I was so taken by what little concern home owners had for the cohesive look of the neighborhood... Colonial houses next to Greek revival next to a Swiss chalet. It was terrible. I feel the same about painting house a crazy color. It would be giving the middle finger to the rest of the hood.

Now a fun door color... that's a different story. xo

The brick wall + The wood ceiling and cabinetry+ the apple green oven=perfection.

I am sort of at a loss with how much I love this kitchen space. It is so elegant and chic as hell, yet inviting... so industrial and raw, yet so refined. Je love.

Is it just me or do others notice this trend in "no rug rooms"? Not sure the point of it. John Derian's apartment (in the T mag this past weekend) is noticeably rug-free as well- although his floors were all painted and specific. It just looks (literally and aesthetically) cold. These parquet floors are fine but certainly don't warrant full view.

I love our chairs (pic #15), although they are admittedly not the most comfortable.

One sad note is that, after 40 some-odd years (these were from my parent's home), the unique paper cording snapped, and I am having a really hard time finding someone in the city who sells it or repairs it (the research I've done is endless and the cording seems to be impossible or $$ to get).

Any thoughts, AT peeps?

Also, for what it's worth, my name is Alec not Alex. Story of my life... xo

A. This place is AMAZING. The layout/style/furnishings are thrilling to me. The fact that so much was found on Craigslist is INSANE! How do I only find "used Billy Bookcases" and she furnished her entire place with the most stunning MCM pieces around?? Well played, m'lady.

Also: Hysterical that there are so many comments regarding the crazy close-up photos so often used in these tours. I thought I was alone in how frustrating I find them to be.

That said, this place is great. Xo

I agree with the above statement that the article falls short by not talking about present day designs and designers- only typical MCC versions which are now sold by big manufacturers, not the designers themselves.

Although I adore my classic pieces that I inherited (I could never afford them on my own), I also understand that the very point of many of these designs were to be accessible to the masses (Eames, et al) - not exclusive to Herman Miller or whoever now sells them.

Also, I recently purchased a knockoff molded plastic "Eiffel" chair and I'm glad that I paid $100 for it and not $500 as I promise the only difference is that the receipt was not from DWR. I like to think that the Eamses would be psyched that I beat the system. Also, you gets what you pay for- some knockoffs are crap. So there's that...

Finally, I might "steal" this story and use it on my own design blog. So BAM! The knock-off cycle continues! Xo.

Oy, Honey.

Did anyone see when Barbra Streisand was on Oprah, and they showed her home where she recreated an entire shopping mall in her basement complete with "Ye Olde Timey" store fronts? It was awful. That's what this question reminds me of. Sorry.

But if advice is really wanted... a bunch of clear glass mason jars sound fine if you need to. However, as someone who keeps all his glass vases and bowls up high on top of his kitchen cabinets, Ill say that, while the glass looks nice, they have to come down and be dusted and washed. A LOT.

I'm not gonna lie, I am freaked out by birds, so I pretended that they are all porcelain or wood while I looked thru the pics which made viewing much more enjoyable.

Love the mix of funky and traditional. The space is youthful and hip as hell. Anywhere else I'd say no, but here, I'm all about that resin owl table. Very cool. Like it a lot.

This is a rental?! Damn, sometimes living in New York seems like a joke.

What a great space. Love love love the pipe shelving. That little recessed bookcase is a dream. You have a deft hand at display, m'lady. Nothing looks too precious and yet everything the eye lands on is so interesting. I am surprised that you say your challenge is knowing when to stop. You clearly figured it out. Really nice.

I'd say a soft touch with the orange (NOT with pillows) is the way to go. A little orange ceramic vase or lacquered tray on a table somewhere, or a touch of the orange in some art... I think the piping works fine with the chair fabric (though I agree with the above comment to paint those chairs out).

Yes, a coat of crisp white paint will bring the stone wall up to date. I'd ABSOLUTELY paint the beams white, too. I'd do a big round "game table" with chairs centered in front of the stone wall. I assume the TV goes on the wall to the left of the door, and so a large sectional (you can really go huge) using the chaise length to divide the space. Lose the fixtures, get some good lamps, take up that wall-to-wall (or redo with sisal). Some white Marais bar stools for that counter (I'd paint out/change the kitchen cabinets to a white, as well). I'd keep it family friendly and chic with linen/earth tones and pops of bright joyous color via wall art. Congrats! It's an amazing space.

While Jarrett himself acknowledges the "Eames explosion" I have to say there is such an elegant touch that everything really works for me. I am mad for the built-ins and cabinetry in the kitchen. The color and layout are so calming and inviting... this looks like a place to be, not just a place to look at.

Also the art. That baby Buddha over the bed is INSANE! I love it so much, I don't know what to do.

I'm going to "yes, and" GRAY's suggestion of Home Depot. It seems for the same price, you can actually go and see what they look like.

I will also say that when $$ is an issue (vs. convenience, because you'll have to measure and install yourself), I have used SelectBlinds. Great prices and there are plenty of wood blinds with blackout or lined options available.
