As a long-time chicken owner, I have to disagree that taking care of chickens is hard work. Dirty? Maybe, depending on what you're comfortable with, but not hard. They do take daily care. We look after ours morning and evening and move their tractor daily, but they are much less work than our cats or a dog, and it is super easy to find someone willing to look after them when we will be away for a weekend or a week since they get to keep the eggs.
Pros & Cons of Raising Backyard Chickens

We have 10 ft ceilings in our kitchen and 12 ft in the rest of the house. It would be ridiculous to have cabinets all the way to an 11 ft ceiling. They would be virtually inaccessible and look odd, IMO. Unless you need the storage, I'd hang them 8 or 9 ft with molding around the tops and leave the rest open. We love ours that way.

I just can't get behind this as a hard and fast rule. We have 12 foot ceilings in every room of our home. It is an original craftsman style home, and it think it would look ridiculous to have curtains hanging twelve feet up when the tops of the woodwork around the windows is *only" 9.5 feet high. 2.5 feet of odd space floating up there inbetween curtains that sore into the sky would look silly. Having curtains that are placed just above and outside the woodwork makes our rooms feel cozier to me.
