I think it looks great - sometimes it's nice to have dark and cozy den. Add some bright accent colors with pillows and accessories, but please don't ditch the wood blinds! I think they look wonderful combined with the wood trim.

Get another end table, a coffee table, add a few more lamps, and center the couch and chairs on the rug (without blocking the fireplace).

Hard to tell much with just one photo, but I can safely say that a fireplace is a pink elephant that can't be removed from a room. Then again, I agree with Dorothy Draper about using fireplaces as focal points...

Jerry-rigging boards over it isn't likely to look too great, so you might do better find some fireplace screens to cover the holes.

If it were my house, I'd take down the green picture, rearrange the furniture, and possibly paint the bricks to match my walls.

It depends on your budget, and how you feel about embracing the green. Personally, I'd work with it because I prefer old and solid tubs/toilets. That avocado hue definitely could veer into a Hollywood Regency decor, if you're into that kind of thing.

No matter what you do, please immediately use that hideous toilet seat as kindling!

I like it, except for the gawky white rug.

Frankly, it's refreshing to see something that isn't midcentury modern featured here. If I see one more Miller shell chair...

Just out of curiosity, what would it cost to reupholster two chairs like those?

The cheapest and easiest solution would be to color-code your clothes. It's surprising what a difference that makes.

The Corona collection at Macy's is similar (and far more affordable than something from R&B!).

What a coincidence. My dog just won the rug war a few days ago and has been enjoying her new bed tremendously.

For some reason she LOVED sleeping, rolling, and drooling on my beautiful flokati rug. You can machine wash it, but it will end up matted and kind of gross-looking. I gave up and tossed it in her slumber corner, in effect giving her a $120 bed.

Why not start an archival site for Domino, Blueprint, House & Garden, etc.? Those of us with back issues could scan and post...pesky copyright laws be damned.

I'm sitting in my office at a beige l-shaped Steelcase desk right now. Nice and roomy, but certainly not ergonomically friendly.

I want Harvey's green velvet sofa, except with less-saggy cushions.

I've had this in my bath and kitchen for almost a year and love it. It was super-easy to install, and several folks have mistaken it for real wood.

FWIW, I think Five Guys Burgers uses it (it a really unappealing moldy hue) in their restaurants.

I grew up having live xmas trees, and though my boyfriend fought it tooth-and-nail, I'm continuing the tradition. Nothing tops the aroma of a fraser fir coupled with the sight of tacky multicolored lights and tinsel.

I downplay my guilt by figuring that since the trees have already been chopped down, I may as well buy one rather than letting it go to waste (this is similar to how I justify buying steak...).

Sheesh, judging by some of these responses why not change the title from "House Tour" to "Good Question"?

I'll agree that it seems kind of young and mishmashed, but everybody has to start somewhere. It's tough to decorate cohesively on a small budget, especially after only spending two months in an abode.

With such rich colors, I think that painting the doors to match the walls would look best.

Spray foam is somewhat pricey, but works pretty well:
(http://www.icynene.com/). You can also rent a machine from Home Depot and spray cellulose insulation in yourselves.

Otherwise, maybe lay the pink stuff everywhere and use plyboard sheets over the sections you'll use for storage.

There's a design district north of Forsyth Park along Whitaker Street (near Jones Street). Broughton Street/City Market are good stops as well, and I believe there are also a few shops near Liberty and Abercorn streets. If you do decide to venture to River Street, avoid the steep steps and take advantage of the elevator near the Hyatt!

Don't go to the Lady and Sons unless you're wearing a fannypack - if you wish to eat cattle-style try Mrs. Wilkes instead. Also try Back in the Day Bakery for some rad banana pudding, and grab a coffee at the Sentient Bean.

If you head out to Tybee Island this weekend, beware of pirates.

And I'll second kennjamin's suggestion to be cautious. For a smallish city, Savannah has more than its fair share of crime.

I'd love to eat by 7, whereas my boyfriend usually doesn't want to eat before 10. We've compromised somewhat - when I cook, we eat no later than 8, and when he cooks it's closer to 915 (by which time I've completely spoiled my dinner by gorging on snacks...).

I can't picture someone with five-inch Manolos or a short skirt or a suit ever wanting to come to your parties if you have a conversation pit.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd consider that an added bonus of having a pit...

I believe the beige stones are "pea gravel", I know that they're sold by the bag at Home Depot/Lowes. I've also seen paver stones in that material at specialty garden shops.

They're great for walkways - since the stones are so smooth and small, they don't hurt your feet if you walk on them barefoot.
