Hi @JillOlivia: The succulents are held in place with a chicken wire screen. Succulents are very shallow-rooted, and will do well even with just an inch or two of space for their roots. You can make a frame yourself, or purchase one (with or without the succulent cuttings) from places like Succulent Gardens http://sgplants.com/ Once you add the succulents, you will need to keep them on a flat surface until they get a bit larger and their roots spread out.
