One big post-party fiasco....sticky beer residue, food, dirt, you name it. It took a lot of elbow grease - we even had to get a scraper to get gunk off the tile floor!

I would use a clear shower curtain (no pattern) so you don't feel even more claustrophobic! And a LARGE mirror (no frame, just beveled edges) on the wall opposite the shower.

Totally agree w/everyone's suggestion to bring your eye UP to some great artwork above the toilet. Also love the striped rug idea. :)

Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: How Do I Decorate This Narrow Bathroom?
6/26/08 9:43 AM

That brown carpet-encased tub is a deal-breaker!! :)

Actually, I ask about neighbors and noise too (we're talking apts here, obviously, not houses). The apartment can be stunning but if you have partying frat boys or what have you, that's most certainly a deal breaker....I do like to sleep every night. Call me crazy! Easy to decorate an apartment - hard to get neighbors to change their habits.

p.s. wonderful learning experience: living next to an elderly person in SF who was hard of hearing and left the tv blaring ALL NIGHT LONG (fell asleep to it). They couldn't even hear my knocking to ask to turn it down. That was a great situation. NOT!

Although the different elements (electric blue wall, window frame, floor) are beautiful in themselves, I have to say I don't think they go well TOGETHER. There is something incongruous about that old-fashioned floor with such a bright blue/crisp white. I feel like the wood detail would look so much better with a less mod/electric hue. So I personally don't think the trim or the radiator are the real problems here...

OP - I think you have some great suggestions here, both comical and practical. I have a neighbor who is in love with my cat. She calls to her (and of course my cat responds by meowing for ten minutes), and even knocked on the French windows/doors when I was home, to "summon" the cat. They then had a meow-fest, human to cat, for 5 minutes. It seemed an eternity; I was livid. I didn't know what to do and was in quite a tizz.

However, the friendliness thing seemed to work - I say hello every time I pass, force a smile, and she has stopped her invasive/annoying behavior (for now!). She is unemployed, she is lonely, she loves my cat. Not the worst crime.

I would vote on the side of compassion, especially where the elderly are concerned. They are lonely, their kids probably never call (if they had any), everyone is just too busy for them. They are the neglected in our busy busy lives.

I also agree with the poster who asked how long you had been there. Maybe she has lived there forever and is curious to see what the new people are doing with the place. Just show her! Say "you seem to have a green thumb", ask some dumb gardening question, but fully take her into your yard (since she's so damn curious about it!), and give her a tour of the house to boot! I really believe she will stop the surreptitious looks once she has had a proper eyeful. Being neighborly and compassionate are good things, no?

Good luck! I know it's thoroughly annoying but I think your kindness will have good results! :)

Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | LA Good Question: Dealing With Nosy Neighbors?

It's hard to get a sense of your taste b/c there isn't much in the way of artwork or furniture in the pics - you seem to like classic, traditional lines (couch, architecture of house). It's also hard to really see the color of the countertops. That said, any money you put into the kitchen will come back to you in resale (as you know)...so do it! New granite or Corian countertops (dark) will update the kitchen tremendously, as well as refacing/redoing the cabinets. Now's the time to do these things, not after you've lived in it for 8 years and grown used to the pink countertop....

About the living room: the most glaring problem, to me, is that cheap-looking thin piece of wood serving as a mantel. Do you need it? I recommend getting rid of it altogether. There is so much going on against that wall, esp. with the windows (and as you point out, gold fire screen), that board just cuts the wall in two, making it look squatter. Squat no good. Your furniture placement also seems to be away from the fireplace - not sure what else is going on in the room that you would want to have your back to the fireplace/windows.

some things to think about.... p.s. I don't mind the gold firesurround (if u take down that shelf), but yeah, the sconces have gotta go....

p.s. your house looks lovely, surrounded in greenery! Lucky you!

Called the number - no such luck; they are updating the site but feathers is absolutely correct: the shelf is $350 (on sale from $500) and 3 additional shelves are $15. So no matter the configuration, the library carts are $350-500 - in case you're wondering where your tax dollars are going.. ;P

um, yes, AT Staff, PLEASE check your prices before posting. My heart soared, then fell. If these were truly $15 I would buy the stock out! But not a deal at $350. BIG, BIG BUMMER!

Hi Yelena,

Totally agree that the room seems very disjointed - like people walk through it en route to somewhere else rather than a place to linger. Don't know if the sectional is where it is to maximize a view out of a window? Or just b/c the wall is there?

You totally need to paint the room - even a pale sand/beige/taupe would calm it down a little, and make the sofa and chairs look so much better! I am also against a pale wood table, given the wooden railing and hardwood floors. Go with glass/metal, or a dark wood.

You have a great space and nice couch - but I recommend you check out some magazines and books to really study spatial relationships and colors to figure out what you want to do! :)

Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: How Should I Finish Decorating This Room?

what if you....put a fluorescent orange ping-pong ball in fishnet (as if it were "caught"), and stapled the fishnet to the inside of the cabinet and used the ping pong ball as a cabinet pull. Okay, has this office made me lose my mind entirely?

That's pretty crazy, huh?

Apartment Therapy Chicago | CHI Good Questions: Temporary Fix for Cabinets?

This may be a labor-intensive project (and too 'mod' for the rest of your apt), but how cool would it be to blow up a panoramic photo (landscape) or a portrait (self, loved one, animal) and cut it into four equal portions and cover the four cabinets with that ONE photo? Tee-hee. Hey, you never know what may look cool. It certainly wouldn't be boring.

I like the knotted fabric pull suggestion above, I think it's clever, but if you open cabinets with dirty/wet hands as often as I do....could be kinda gross over time.

Apartment Therapy Chicago | CHI Good Questions: Temporary Fix for Cabinets?

You said you wanted the cabinets not to look cheap....I don't think cork fulfills that criteria. And think of how much more clutter there will be when you have posted your bills, shopping lists, and postcards up there! I honestly don't think the CABINETS are the problem. The white-on-white is the problem.

So...what do you think about painting the wall/backsplash so the white really pops? That's a cheap and simple solution. Or paint the cabinets. Or cover them with cool fabric/paper, affixed with double-sided tape. It's just another year's rental, right? The paper doesn't have to be EXACT dimensions of the cabinet. You could make a square inside each cabinet, so the white looks like it frames it. It might look cute - you probably have some cool wrapping paper right now which might do the trick. Doesn't have to be all the same, too. Maybe alternate every other door....you'll make it work!

I would get a big basket/tray to organize the clutter which (it happens to all of us) seems to have accumulated on the countertops.

The no-knob thing sounds frustrating. You could get a glass or ceramic knob big enough to hide the hole, then put a thin piece of 3-inch metal or wood piece on the other side (inside) of the cabinet, with nut and bolt, so it (the knob) stays put. It won't be beauteous on the inside, but....who cares? Temporary fix for something that's making you nuts. Looks like you only need six and there's a wide range of cute knobs there. You can take them when you leave! Hope this helped. :)

Kevin Haley's house was featured about a year or two ago in House & Garden (I think?)...and the backyard is truly sumptuous and inspiring. If you love the photos you see here, try to seek it out because those photos were truly stunning (as well)! His website has some photos too..
