thank you for your helpful suggestions! to answer some of your concerns: my landlady claims she has removed all of the mothballs, so I think I'm kind of SOL there.
Any suggestions for removing the smell or perhaps deadening the negative effects of the mothballs?

my couch is too comfy, and i lose focus if i sit on it. i've been trying to do my grad school readings there, but i usually just fall asleep. all work is done in the office (and having a desktop there helps). although since i spend so much time doing work (such is the life of the grad student) i barely spend any time in my bedroom, which is one of the largest, nicest and comfiest parts of the house! go figure

it's so interesting how eating out is one of the first things to go-- i believe for most people eating out is a luxury, so we cut back on luxuries. It's hard to cut back on bills (try to use less cell minutes? less electricity? less water? all these things are good to do no matter what, but how much does it truly help with the monthly bill?)
what things do we have that we have to keep, no matter what the economy is doing? good quality food? tivo, for some?

I wanted a very similar duvet from Pottery Barn but with 2 cats I knew it would never work. I now have a linen duvet (they don't get their claws in it) and a shamois duvet (they LOVE to sleep on it and haven't wrecked it thus far). Go with heavy fabrics and you should be fine. But definitely skip this one!

i have the peek a boo cat toy thing, and i hate to say it but my girls don't care about it at ALL. they enjoy the balls that came with it, but not in conjunction with the toy. i think i'm going to try that string thing that hangs from the doorknob and see how they like that.

i've been using the clevercat for a while and i LOVE it-- i have 2, one for each cat. it keeps the litter tracking to a minimum, they can't throw litter out of the box when they dig.
i used to use The World's Best cat litter and while i liked it, it didn't clump very well, was sticky, and tracked EVERYWHERE! the tracking was really a problem for me. then my cats got coccidia, so i switched to tidy cats multiple cat and that works well to mask the smell. i'm interested in maybe switching to the crystals-- are they about as cheap as tidy cats? do most cats seem to like them? anything else to add that might induce me to switch?

i was surprised that i had a hard time finding a place in Virginia to move to with 2 cats (they only shred furniture with their claws and all the furniture is mine, so it's my problem, not the landlord's). Thankfully I found an independant landlord who agreed to take the cats (I sent a picture!) and with no additional deposits. Hooray!

bepsf, that is a good suggestion. i don't, personally, have any collections but i do own this toaster and since someone recently got me a gorgeous, new toaster oven, Hello Kitty is going bye-bye.
however, palmetto, your judgement on what is a good or worthy collection isn't necessary. i think the point of this post is that no one wants to end up where their collection has taken over their entire house/life, no matter what it is.

SCREENS forever! i'd love to not have them, but the cats would want out and with the 2 inch mosquitoes and roaches we have in Houston (not to mention the lizard/geckos that come in ANYway, as do the roaches) it's a no go.

i've had this for years and it always makes me smile! one thing to note: if your door is very heavy (like ours is), it will wear it down pretty quickly.

well i'm relatively new to big DIY projects, but reupholstering my 1969 vintage desk chair (it's still in the process) has been awesome! not only am i happy that i have something so personalized, but it's exciting to see it come together. i took it apart, covered the nubby, orange fabric with pink and white toile, spraypainted the base white, and am putting it back together this weekend. it's disgustingly girly and i love it :)

i just read it's scented to the point of almost nauseating, a smell like "boiling honey" (says wikipedia). it's gorgeous and i'm sure it smells wonderful, not nauseating! that's a beautiful yard you have :)

i sanded and painted some furniture, but that's so easy it barely qualifies as a DIY, no? i'm reupholstering a 1969 desk chair but since it all comes apart and screws together again i don't think thats too hard. if it involves only a few tools and is quite simple, count me in. if it takes longer than a day or a few hours, no way.
