I hear "Lose money on the sale but make up for it on the buy." all the time and I still don't quite understand how this works for anyone. I don't think a lot of people have tens of thousands in savings to pay off a $20 loss on a condo and then turn around and put a $20k down payment on another place. Who has that cash?

If we were to sell our place, we'd lose probably about $20k. We've got someone renting our small condo and we're renting a house in another state (job relocation caused us to move). I think if we can sell in the next year, we'll rent for about 5 years to pay off what we've lost and then save up for another down payment.

Another vote for keeping them. They'll be great as they get older. I think of all of the little things my sister and I collected in our room. Speech trophies, awards and birthday statues. Then as we got older, dried corsages, dance photos, souvenier trinkets . . . I think it will actually be a space saver to have a place for all of those little things so they aren't sitting on top of desks or dressers. And my vote would be to paint them white and then inside paint them an alternate color. For example, if the room is pink, the shelves are white, paint the inside of the shelves yellow or maybe a darker pink.

When it comes to changing, round is so much better. I don't know if I'd get a round changing table but I have two of those round patemm pads and I love them.

I've seen the all wood desks, the few I saw for sale cheap were a combo of wood and metal and the top of the desk was this slick sort of pale wood colored formica. Not terrible but not always the best looking after decades of children using them.

Love this! I recently saw a whole pile of desks at an antique store recently for like $15 and wanted to remake one but my mom insisted that I wouldn't be able to repaint the top of the desk since it was that formica stuff. But I didn't even think of a white board coating . . .

Can not say enough good things about the Aerobed. I also found it much cheaper than $80 (around $60 on Amazon but I've also heard you can find it at Costco for around that much). We used it for a week recently when we moved and my son (who's almost 2) was perfect with it. He slept so soundly and honestly the night process started to get easier because he could just hop into it himself rather than needing us to help him in like with a crib. I love it. The only slight downside if I had to pick one is that the cover is fleece so it's a little warm (he'd wake up sweaty) but that's a minor minor issue.

That's really good to know. We were gifted a used Little Tykes play kitchen and it's faded and pink and I wanted to remake it with paint but wasn't sure how it would work. I'm inspired!

As long as they aren't any more expensive than regular diapers I might buy a small package for fun. Yeah, they're kind of tacky but otherwise harmless.

My son loves those pouches, however, my biggest problem is that he squeezes the heck of them and the sauce splurts everywhere. I don't think a spoon would help that issue with him. But it's a great travel option for babies who don't hold onto the pouch yet.

I frequently turn to my dog and child and say "Are the two of you working together to make sure I don't ever have nice things ever again?"

jennib is right, it's just stuff. I try to remember that so I don't lose my cool. But man, seeing my scratched up stained chair makes me want to cry many many days.

I also have that stepstool. My only complaint is that it's a little too low for my son to use the sink now--he can't reach the faucets. But he stands on it to brush his teeth and watch himself in the mirror so it works for that and takes up no space at all.

Very pretty. I keep forgetting that you can buy chalkboard paint in different colors. I like that it's a subtle quiet sort of shade.

I didn't do mother's day cards but I try to send cards during the first year of motherhood for friends. Usually when they return back to work (if they do) or just a few months down the road. I figure that the first year is hard and sometimes it's nice to get a little note out of the blue saying "thinking of you and hoping you're doing OK"

Yeah, agreed with happyinseattle. I didn't feel comfortable nursing in front of people. I think I had some good visitors (one brought me Starbucks all the time and then would leave after 15 minutes, I loved her), another set of neighbors had us over for a dinner and then let us leave early-- and then we had the people who brought food and stayed until 10 p.m. not taking any hints, another person who popped in at 9 p.m. and woke us up after we'd gone to bed at 8, another person who arrived late and then brought children they were watching and let them hold the baby without asking me if it was OK and then did not leave for hours . . .

Totally agree about The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Other books I'd add to the list?

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Black Boy
The Crucible
The Bell Jar
The Cider House Rules

I think at this age kids are still pretty insulated so books should open them up to new ways of thinking. Stepping into the life of a teen from a different time or a different race is a good way to widen your world.

I have a few of those strapping cubes from Land of Nod. LOVE them. They really are very sturdy too. I used a few as toy cubes and they outlasted him trying to stand in them or fall on them. Also, they have much larger baskets in the same colors so you can use one of those for a hamper and everything can match. I really do love them.

Such a great idea. A place for everything and everything in its place. Plus, it really seems like the kids will be able to keep everything tidy.

Have you checked out Haiku bags? You can get them on Zappos or REI but they also have their own site:

http://www.haikubags.com/

I see non-moms using them all the time on the train commute because they're large with lots of compartments. But then I've also seen them sold as diaper bags. I bought one and then contacted the company and they sold me a matching changing pad. Might be too flowery for some but the price is pretty good.

Cream of wheat also works great for learning to use a spoon. I have had more luck with adult yogurt or the Yo Kids yogurt rather than the baby yogurt which is too too drippy. Yo Kids sticks to the spoon better.

I found a HandySitt on Zuilily before for $70. I had a good experience ordering from them.
