Personally I would hate having to rely on my smartphone as my remote control for the following reasons:

1) What if i don't have my phone on me at all times? What if it is on the charger in the other room?
2) Building on #1, this will surely run down the battery much faster, forcing me to charge it more often. It would be a step backwards to use a remote that is plugged into a charger because it's low on battery.
3) Lack of physical buttons on a smartphone. I want to raise/lower the volume, open and navigate the channel guide, go to the last channel, etc. without looking down at the remote.
4) What if a roommate or guest wants to watch tv and you (or the only person with a smartphone) is not in the room or is on a phone call?
