I steep it extra strong and use the liquid to steam veggies (favorite is spice tea for steamed carrots). I like the ideas I am seeing here too! What great ideas!

I will definitely be putting some around my plants this summer - I have never heard of that. I usually put spent bags in my compost bin, but this is a more direct way.

I once had a kitchen so small that my storage containers were in a trunk in the living room, and my dried goods were in the linen closet. So, if you use a bookcase with doors or a curtain, no one would ever know what was there. Just disguise it to look like living room furniture.

@larrouxgirl: I was once told to take out all the pictures I had of family too, and I did. But I can't get to a "homey" feel without what is important to me in my home. I like looking at my son's goofy grin or my dad (RIP) in his construction-worker pants and toolbelt, while I am sitting on my couch. I keep trying to find what "it" is that I am missing, and have collected a lot of clutter in my life trying to get "homey" again. So, the pictures are coming back into the living area of my home. Maybe I have it backwards, but it works for me!

I have lived on the first floor for years, and I think I now have the first neighbor that has actually LIVED in the apartment above (she has parties, moves around a lot, etc). Either that, or she is part horse. It really would help if she took her shoes off when walking on the hardwood floors, though. I am told one person upstairs (that I never heard) wore mocassins at home, to help buffer her walking. I guess I would say that if you hear a noise, assume it is amplified greatly when it is also above a person's head. Sometimes the noise even makes my dog duck his head as he is looking up at the ceiling. (and I know the reality is that it is just something that fell on the floor)

I don't complain though. I think that is part of apartment life that has to be dealt with. I didn't have to listen to anything for years when I lived above, or in single floor places.
Good luck!

Restful and still full of life! It would end up being my living room, since I would live here (never wanting to leave).

How to Make Vegetable Stock Cooking Lessons from The Kitchn

This is what I do as well. And it is made from veggies I already eat/like, so the broth will be good as well!
I keep onions and garlic separate, and make broth from those alone.

I have never been without broth, since I always have a ready supply of veggies in the freezer if needed - and I can control the sodium, etc in my organic broth.

I shop at resale shops and donate quite a bit, as well as using Freecycle. If an item is stained or otherwise less than what I would want to buy at said shops, it will be repurposed. I make rugs, rags, potholders, etc. If it is even too bad for that, it goes into the compost bin, if it is a natural fiber. Better to be food for my garden than going to a landfill, IMHO.

I got rid of my salad spinner due to space. Now, I put my rinsed greens in a pillowcase (an old one - lower thread count/thinner material will let more water through) and swing it in a circle (like described above) on my patio/balcony. When I bring it back inside, I just turn the pillowcase inside out into a bowl. The pillowcase is a lot easier to find space for!

Zucchini halves (lengthwise). I put them cut side down first, to get grill marks, and then finish with indirect heat (cut side up) and lots of basting with fresh herb butter. YUM!

I agree with MO387. I would still use it as an adult on a hot day - slip my feet into the water or lay under the sprinklers. I could also see it becoming a pond, with koi and water plants later.

I think it is AWESOME! Can I come over and play?

I found a leather couch and chair that is EXACTLY what I would LOVE to have - the closest to a chesterfield I will ever get in my lifetime. But, the leather is horribly dry and uncared for. It doesn't appear to have actual rips. I think the previous owners simply never conditioned it (or not often enough). The frame/cushions/springs are also fine, the only problem is the leather(seems beyone other posts regarding scratches (this would be a full recondition). Is this worth the trip/work? I have a small apartment, so there will be a lot of furniture shifting/culling if I get these pieces, so I would rather get some good advice first.
Thanks in advance!
Susan

meal that is also fairly quick and easy. Often, if I cannot think of a meal that is convenient, and almost ready, I will either go out, go without, or order in. The only option that will fit into any budget is to go without. But none of these ways should become a habit either. :)

It has taken me a LOOOOOONG time to realize that I automatically buy too much food - as if I were still cooking for 4. So, if I eat more expensive (relatively speaking) food but do not waste it, it is still a budget conscious meal in my book. Wasted rice and beans still costs money if I don't eat it all.......

And I am wondering where you are buying your food as well..... it is never that expensive where I shop.....

I also supplement with herbs and veggies from my garden, so that helps.
