Since AT has reposted the piece on LA, I would just like to restate that Venice and Santa Monica are extremely walkable and there is ample public transportation on the Westside. I just passed my one year "car free" anniversary and my bike and bus pass are serving me well.

Not to mention the Expo Line extension, connecting Santa Monica to the existing Expo Line in Culver City (which runs to downtown LA), is set to open in the seond half of 2015 adding light rail to an existing robust bus system. As I said earlier its getting better all the time!

I wish I were savvy enough to take on such a DIY project. But, it is most certainly outside of my skill level. Thank you for the recommendation, though.

Anyone know where that shelving unit/desk in the photo is from? I've been looking for something like that for quite awhile.

I bought 2 Tempurpedic pillows a year ago. They were roughly $180 each. While I have no direct complaints about the pillows, they do not provide the incremental value that I would expect from the increased price. Don't get me wrong, they are great pillows. But they arne't any better than the $50 great pillows I've had in the past. Unless you are buying a pillow that provides a solution to a direct issue like @ruka, I would go with a high quality pillow at a reasonable price.

I live in Santa Monica. I am a "real" Angeleno. I pay $0 for parking. If people want to move here, I welcome them with open arms. It's crowded and I like it just fine.

I live in Santa Monica and I'd say the prices listed are spot on. And I echo the preivous statements that you can save money and time living close to where you work, which I understand isn't possible for everyone. So even though rental prices are higher in Santa Monica, I come out pretty even by walking/biking to work because I save on gas, car maintenance, parking, etc.

I completely agree with @SoCalLifer that you can structure your life so that you are not a slave to your car in LA.

Many people in LA live 20+ miles from where they work which results in long commutes. Additionally, people choose to live areas around the outside of LA (South Bay, Santa Clarita, etc) because you get more space for your money.

However if you prefer a car free lifestyle- live where you work (or work where you live) and take a cue from all the amazing AT articles about doing more with less space. I live and work in Santa Monica and walk or take the bus almost everywhere.

On $2,500 you are not going to be buying a full new set of furnature. But you can certainly, re-paint the room, buy decorative accent peices, purchase new throw pillows, and get some new window treatments. Which can totally recordate an entire room quite nicely.

With lower budgets you get more impact by spreading the money around. Start saving now and buy a new couch next year. Or start hunting now and find a used treasure for a steal.

Add water to the crust mixture with a spray bottle. This way you will use the smallest amount of water while getting the most coverage, allowing your crust to come to together without overworking or adding too much water.

Like @Alannah, I tried to make the jello shots molded in lime peels. "Scooping" the lime fruit from the peels is very diifcult, time consumming, and messy. Even after 2 hours of cleaning out lime peels I still had small pits of lime pulp. The end result was visually appealing but not at all worth the time and effort.

I love gruyère for egg dishes. It melts wonderfully and has a distinctive taste that doesn't overpower the entire dish.

I have found better success with making recipies that fit within the dietary restrictions without having to make substitution. As in making chocolate fondue instead of gluten free cookies. No fake'in bacon, no gluten free flour, or tofu in place of eggs, etc.

Zucchini and yellow squash ribbons mimic the look of pasta. They are very filling and can be bought at a good price point.

Cabbage is very filling and inexpensive and can be used to make a varitey of salads and slaws.

Potatoes are cheap and filling. They are however higher in carbs. If you areonly avoiding grains like pasta and rice like the examples in your post than potatoes are another good option.

Peppermint oil deters mice. While it doesn't solve your mouse problem, it is a natural way of detering the critter from going into areas where you keep your food- cabinets, pantries, etc, without living in bleach fumes.

Cucumber is the key to a tasty green juice. Its watery texture and cool refreshing (slightly pepper-y) taste offsets the bitterness of kale and other greens. And it is a better addition than apples because of the lower sugar content. If you are looing to make an all veggie green juice- cucumbers are your best bet.

I purchased this APPLARO set 4 years ago and sold it last year when I moved.

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39898474/

I treated it once with oil they recommend- and never again after. I stayed outside and I did not cover it. It was rained on often. With all that said, it held up amazing well and was very strudy. I held many an outdoor dinner party on that table and loved that it expanded to set up to 12. I was very happy with my purchase and the quality of the table and chairs. Additionally when I sold it last year, I sold it for 50% of the purchase price
