I've been trying to plan out my dinner menus on Monday morning and then after work I shop for everything I need for the week. A few things I have learned are:

1. You will get sick of chicken if cook enough for three or for dinners that week. No matter how many different spins you put on it.

2. However making enough for more than one meal is still a good idea - just freeze it for a fast meal NEXT week.

3. I try not to repeat myself from week to week. But I find meal planning easier if if follow some general rules - like one night is salad night, one night is fish night, one night is Mexican...and so on. Rather than repeating the dish each week I repeat the general idea.

4. Be flexible. I planned on meatloaf (yuck - but my husband likes it...) for Thursday but since I'll be out of town that day I'm making it tonight.

5. It's hard coming up with interesting vegetable side dishes. Especially when the only vegetable you like is an olive in your martini.

Thanks for this post - I think it would make for a great weekly column. The rest of us can follow along.

I love this space. Particularly the little dining area. So elegant yet fresh and fun looking. This one gets my vote!

Holy mother of bob! I need to know the paint colors!! Specifically the interior of the built in shelving in the living room and wall color in the living room (carried out throughout the house, maybe??)

Love this space. Love. It.

Maybe paint stores would have old inventory of paint chips (colors no longer carried or name changes)? But with the proliferation of paint chip projects out on the interwebs I'm guessing even if there was such a supply they would be depleted by now.

Wouldn't hurt to ask though.

I admit to not seeing the difference until I read the accompanying text. Now I can see the subtle, yet positive change. Yes the camera angle is slightly different but you can still see how the curtains are more in balance with couch.

If I see a certain item or look on more three blogs I immediately dismiss it as being too trendy and for people that can't make their own design choices. Yet I have a "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster and proudly display it. In my laundry room where I'm the only one that ever sees it....

The C&B website shows a picture of the bedding on their Colette bed which is upholstered in a flax/natural linen color. I think the color (used as a wall color) pairs nicely with the bedding and provides a calming counterpoint to the busyness of the bed. I think dark furniture (like your night stand) and dark frames look nice and crisp against it.

Yes AT - let's see what Evan and Greg are up to now. I'd love to see the furnishings in a new setting and what additions/subtractions were made.

I would go the simple route and tear out the weird angled bit of stone above the fireplace. See if that doesn't improve things before doing anything else. You may end up liking the fireplace better.

We had a similar situation only it was brick above the fireplace (not even real brick - just decorative thin bricks) and it was an easy DIY demo (although we did have a contractor replace the sheetrock).

Those hanging pendant lights would drive me crazy - I would replace them with ones that hung at the same level rather than having one higher than the other.

What a great use of the space.

I wonder if this would work as a temporary measure (temporary being two or three years) and then down the road be used as a sub-floor for hardwood. Could you just install hardwood right over it?

What a lovely, feminine space. It makes me want to see more of it.

Absolutely gorgeous. I don't think it needs to be unbuttoned. To me it is a good balance of very organized/thought out and personal. And I covet the kitchen and bath....and the arched doorways....and the niches in the living room...

Sigh.

Gracious Edmundd - no need to be so rude. The stuff in the picture is clearly not hers (since she hasn't moved in yet) and she already said she wasn't going to paint anything...

I agree with the other (more polite) commenters and suggest keeping things uncluttered. I would put a light colored fireplace screen in front of the fireplace - something with a nice design painted on it. Place a light colored chair where the TV is located.

It looks like there might be wood wainscoting on the other walls as well? I'm not sure what is on the floor but it is wood then I would put down a light colored rug to help balance all the dark wood.

I love the white back drop and all the colorful elements. That turquoisy blue dresser makes me want to go paint mine.

I have to say picture 18 gave me a start - I though it was a very life-like jack in the box at first.

This is the kind of house tour that makes me want to get to know the home owner better. Lovely, personal tour. I found myself pouring over each picture slowly and carefully, rather than just clicking through quickly.

It's peaceful (we are on five acres)
The laundry room (utilitarian with a simple vintage/retro feel)
Big windows in the living room
Kitchen (remodeled to my exact specification - reminiscent of my Grandmother's big kitchen)
Large eating area in kitchen
Hall bath is gorgeous
Hardwood floors

Our house was built in the 70's but the interior has a kind of 40's feel to me. Simple, clean lines, solid construction. Nothing too fancy or "on trend" (a phrase I hate). All the rooms have a purposeful feel to them.

Okay misogynistic was a bit dramatic but it does seem very masculine. I don't have any objection with each design individually but collectively is just seems like mostly men live and work in this neighborhood.

I think my objection is more with the perception that only men work in the financial world.
