I used AirBNB when I went to New York last year. It was a great experience and I'll be using it again when I go this year.

As the article said you do get a better sense of what the city is really like and it's nice to be able to speak with a local.

The primary reason I choose AirBNB though is cost. My next trip is about $25 a night per person. There is no way I'd be able to find a hotel in NYC for even double or triple that price. For me it's the difference between spending a week or a weekend.

To those mentioning that their landlords wouldn't approve: #5, the Lockitron, is designed to work with existing locks. It fits over the deadbolt on the inside of your door. From the outside the lock continues to work the same way, but if you have the app you can unlock the door without a key.

I like it...as an accent color. Entire walls would be...disturbing.

I get the concept, and I think it makes sense.

It does seem like a rather large investment, for something that's only going to be used for a year at the most. Why not just buy a pedal bike, then take the pedals off?

I would expand point to 2 to other "software" not just freeware.

An example would be Photoshop. It's amazing, and expensive ( $600). Most people, even professionals probably only use 10% of what that program is capable of. Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator, Lightroom, Aperture, and a dozen others probably do everything most people need, for much less.

If you have the iPhone 4 or below, get the 5.

If you have the 4s, you can probably wait.

Secret email-

Many sites allow you to recover/change your password by sending a link to an email address that you've provided ahead of time. Often they also send notification emails to that address every time you change your password, add another email address, or do some other action that may change who is allowed or how you login.

The secret email address is an address that you ONLY use for the kinds of emails above. You don't give it out to anyone for any other reason.

This helps with security because if someone gets access to an account, at the very least you would be alerted when they change your password.

Using a separate account for recovery also helps limit the damage from one compromised account. Often people will use their other email accounts as the recovery email. Even worse they often all go to the same account. So if someone gets into Gmail, they can now go to Yahoo!, Hotmail, iCloud, your bank, etc, and ask to reset the password. Which sends an email back to Gmail. Now they control everything.

When my iPhone is plugged into my clock radio dock the only sounds it makes are phone calls.

Not sure if that applies to all iPhone docks but it's something to check out.

Instead of a dedicated cigarette lighter phone charger, get one of the cigarette lighter to USB port ones. That way you can charge other things, and you don't have to buy a whole new charger when you get a new phone.

@MandyAtLarge,

You can delete your account. Facebook makes it hard to find, (I could only get at it from a Google Search), but it's there.
