I painted my Financial District kitchen (the only defined room in my apartment) a salmon-carnation pink. The cabinets are a hideous orange-y yellow wood, so I did what I needed to live with them more harmoniously. I figure I'll paint it back before I move out. I'm the one who has to live in the space, as long as I don't permanently damage it, it should be mine to make a comfortable and happy place.

Smoking may be a health hazard, but so are a lot of things. I would flip if someone took away my sugary beverages and candy. These aren't good for me either, but it is my decision to have them. If people are being considerate of others, they get to make their own choices.

I am an asthmatic with 4 smoking parents, needless to say it has always been around. I hate it and it does cause asthma attacks at times. I had a neighbor who smoked (cigarettes and pot) in their apartment and it wafted into my apartment through the vents. This was really frustrating, but I never saw it as their problem. The building had poor air systems and I did what I could (closing the vents at times) to prevent it from coming in. People should be able to enjoy what they want to in their own space, and you're even outside!

The best thing that you can do is be considerate to not smoke constantly out there, and it sounds like you are being very conscientious of your behavior. Beyond getting a fan on your porch, I do not think you should have to do anything else. A nice conversation with them could help. If you go out of your way to discuss your actions with them, they really shouldn't be able to say anything else.

Good luck!

I was without power, gas, and water of any kind (not just hot water... ALL water) for 5 days in NYC. I know that this is revolting, but no one had posted online what to do with human waste in no-plumbing situations. With a small studio apartment and three adults, we were lucky to have two bathrooms, I have watched my fair share of the TV show Hoarders. After navigating this unpleasant situation, what you need in a city:

- Plastic grocery bags
- Small box of kitty litter to combat smells
- Heavy duty trash bags
- A cell phone case with extra battery power (we bought Mophie cases from the apple store... made our power last longer between foraging trips)
- Hot plate for camping
- A crank radio that has battery backup (and test it every once in a while to make sure the battery component works)
- Plenty of flashlights (more than one per person... sometimes the bulbs blow out too...)
- A bath tub full of water if you are worried about a power outage... this is great for washing in the sink, etc
- Lots of candles (be careful when using them, the last thing you need is a fire)
- More batteries than you think you can possibly use, then you won't be miserable "conserving" your flashlight use. It's bad enough already...
- Warm throw blankets, you'll want to be under one even on the couch

I loved this museum, but thought the giftshop was lacking. i appreciate the departure from the usual museum shop, but do wish they had some items that were more location specific. I love to grab postcards of my favorite pieces, professional photography is way better than my own. Also, I think a lot of the soaps/notebooks/cards were overpriced for their quality (only so so).

The museum is definitely worth a trip, but I'd skip the shop.

I've stayed here and taken the elevator, it is so incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately you still have to pay 10 Euro to ride even if you're a guest, but the elevator moves slowly and I took a million photos of amazing saltwater fish. They have a diver clean the tank every morning and it is fascinating to watch. The rooms are nice too, I recommend the stay there to anyone traveling in Berlin.
