Love this!! Would love to do something like this-it's similar to what I had in my previous place, (just a bit more color)-but unfortunately, I'm stuck in a rental with paneling, light paneling, but paneling. Oh well, trying to make the most of it,..or rather "least" of it.. ;)

Interesting comments-on all "sides", (although I think it's silly to have a "side" in this, it's the individual's preference, often tempered with financial or/and location needs).
I'm blessed. I was brought up in a large, 5bdrm home. In my young adult life, I lived in everything from a 1-bedroom, built better than most homes I've lived in, mobile home, (made in 1960, haven't ever seen another "mobile home like it & I often dream about it-it had an "extension" on it, so it didnt feel cramped or even like a mobile home); to living on a plantation in what you may call a "mansion". I bought my dream land at 22, but after putting a cheapie mobile home on it at 30, in a "domestic situation" with my first husband; I ended up giving him everything-just to get away.
I moved and eventually remarried & lived in a large 5bdrm, with six children between us. It didnt last long & I got a lease to own, beautiful, SMALL, Victorian cottage...which I stupidly put in his name during a short reconciliation...and lost everything again. Then, I moved back to my hometown, into a studio apt, but kept a few boxes of the most sentimental & expensive things I'd been able to salvage from the previous 20yrs.
I had to leave to come up north to seek treatment for a rare genetic disorder I have-plus a spinal injury. Bottom line, when I was coming back, my 80-something Dad said he'd sold everything I'd put in storage, "because I didn't think you had anything important"-for $1.
At least $10K of jewelry, art, crystal, antiques..all gone. Vsomeone got one hell of a deal. Unfortunately, it also included my most sentimental stuff I didn't want to bring with me, left it with my Dad for "safekeeping". Pictures, baby books, my kids ornaments they made for me each year, stuff from my childhood-gone.
I moved up to a yoga ashram for 2yrs as the webmaster..starting, literally, with VERY few possessions. I left, met someone in town, moved in together when we got engaged in May. We spent the summer collecting cookware, dishes, furniture, tech stuff. We had a nice, very old home that we were renting. (He had 3 young children that I was adopting after we were married in Jan.). He was killed in an accident Nov 5th, and the landlord lied to the family and police, saying we had broken up, and had no right to anything in the home. That was a Friday afternoon, by the time I got the paperwork. & an attorney on Monday-the house was bare. (I was in the hospital-had a minor heart attack).
I rented the small apt I mentioned in another post, then my loft which was condemned last March-again, I lost a lot, first from damage, then having to be out in 48hrs. I don't drive-legally blind, and at the time, was bedridden 5-6 days/week. Being on disability, I didn't have the money to pay someone to help me-and any friends I had in this town moved away years ago.
SO, I was in a pickle, but my Dad came through-my daughter says because he felt terrible about my stuff 11 years prior. I found an apt that was WAY above my price range. I get less than $800 in disability now, (and yes, I get $59 in food stamps, no housing and Medicare. I'm NOT proud of it, but I don't have a choice anymore). Rent is $915-BUT, includes utilities, cable, Internet, etc. it's also larger than I wanted-BUT, except for the cheap wood paneling, it's a nice, clean, 2bdrm, (2nd bedroom for my kids & uncle who visit + I will need a live-in asst in the near future.). I have a beautiful sun porch and deck. It's over a garage/shop/grow room/hot tub/storage (YES, HOT TUB!! Haven't used it yet, lol, but hope to soon!!), on an organic farm. My Dad is helping with the rent, which brings my disability down, (YES, I report everything), and I don't have a penny to spare-well, except for my Sita, (cat), 5yrs old, who brought me out of a deep depression 5yrs ago. (I also lost a baby at 4 months shortly before my fiancé died).
It's bigger and more to clean than I need, but I have an understanding landlord who has become a friend-she's not in much better shape than me, so we whine together when the weather causes us both to be bedridden.
One of these days I'm thinking we'll get a bottle of wine, have a slumber party, and I'll convince her to let my kids paint this ugly paneling on their next visit!!
<sigh>. Naaaah, both of our doctors would disown us... ;)

The Case for a Small Space

When I first looked, well, nevermind, I think everyone previously commented what I was thinking.
#5 looks like my former "loft" apartment when I first moved in-but I sure as heck wasn't going to leave the walls & ceilings looking like that!! I spent months painting every square inch.
Couldn't help what was underneath though. After 8 years of painting, renovating the beautiful wood floors and knotty pine walls in the "sunroom"-the building was condemned last March & I had to move. :(. (The "living room" ceiling and part of the roof sat on my living room floor, (and over ruined furniture) for over 2yrs. Hauling 37 buckets out EVERYTIME it rained or snowed wasn't exactly "healthy". LOTS of sweet memories though...and I DO miss my, (and my cat's), "pet" bats though!! (Now living on a farm, my cat has plenty of other "pets" she thinks should be playing with her.. ;)

I 3rd/4th/5th wanting to see how a shower in the kitchen works!!
I had to move into a small apartment, temporarily after my fiancé passed away some years ago. I wanted it to be as small as possible because I wouldn't be there long and I wasn't in the mood for a lot of cleaning at the time. I kinda got what I was looking for, but it was the strangest layout I'd ever seen.
The apt had a living room that was smaller than the bedroom the bedroom, 11x9 vs 12x12, the kitchen was itty bitty-two steps in, literally just stood there and turned around-no counter, just sink, 2-burner stove & sm oven, turn around & small fridge & some shelves.
BUT, the bathroom was huge with both a shower & tub & double vanity!! There WERE lots of windows though & a screened in porch!! Lol, I guess when they split up these old buildings into apartments you never know WHAT you're going to get!!

I have a table similar-but the center is just a bit "sunken". Originally, I decided to do kind of a mosaic with handmade paper, and I put a coat of poly over it. It wasn't enough-my living room ceiling & part of the roof, caved in in my last rental-a loft apt. My "decoupage" was ruined.
I have now moved, and am trying to decide what-and HOW-to do with this table. Because it has an old, real leather, (but long thinned out-practically non-existent) slash partly decoupaged top-I'm afraid to sand it. I've tried just peeling it off-works in spots, others I can't even "chip" off with a sharp metal slat, (can't think of the proper name).
I wonder if I can somehow get it kind of even, if I could use this method?
Also, I have a pair of mustard, thick vinyl chairs that came with it. Trying to decide if they are even worth attempting...

Love the eclectic mix, I'm just on a bit of overload trying to look at all the different art, vintage & international pieces!!
My tastes have changed so much over 40yrs though-I'm at the point now that when I see such a glamorous, large, collection like this, my mind says: "good grief, I'd spend every waking moment cleaning these things!
Yes, I'm sure she has help with that, but I'm sure many of us couldn't afford it.

I'm actually looking at the hanging shelf on the left?? (as well as the tiered pots ;). Anyone know where I can get a DIY for those "belted" shelves?

I moved to an organic farm about 6 months ago, and the owners have free range, actually "spoiled" chickens. They got some more chicks just a month after I moved in, and I would help out feeding them & checking the temp-since they were right under my apt. One, a black one, (sorry, don't know the name-but she DOES lay green eggs!!), took a liking to me & now "bug-eyes" leads me to her eggs. I WILL say though that about a month ago, I cracked an egg making French toast, and what I "assume" to be about a 1 inch embryo fell out. I ALWAYS keep in the fridge. I have too many health problems & a depleted immune system, to even take a chance on getting sick.

Heather, I've seen the cat hammock offered...can't remember the site though. I'd bookmarked it because my spoiled furry creature would love it ! Unfortunately, mom likes hammocks too. I bought one, and she races out onto my deck to claim "FIRSTS!!". Dang cat is worse than all 3 of my kids were... ;)

QUESTION: hasn't anyone used the "green bags"? Or have I missed something about them being dangerous or something? I've been using them for 3 years now. As an older single woman, a vegetarian, and "physically challenged", I find washing & drying my fruits & veggies, then putting them in the green bags, suck all the air out; I've had lettuce keep over 3 weeks, still fresh & crisp!! I especially LOVE them for tomatoes, I've actually had tomatoes last 5-6 weeks-as long as the bag is clean, dry, and kept air tight.
PLEASE tell me if I've missed something about these miracle bags!!

Spend tens of thousands of dollars, to build a pretty little house, perched on a 6-7 floor building, hanging over walkways.....
In an earthquake fault zone.
What will they call it after a 6.0 or above hits the area? "Felled Star"?
Sorry, couldn't resist....

Look Up! Do Ho Suh's "Fallen Star"

OK, I FINALLY had to stop "lurking", register, and comment. Hi all, I'm 52, "physically challenged", and just this past 3 weeks had to pack up & move from a 1880's, NorthEastern PA, former rooming house that I had renovated-on my own. The building had been sold to new owners & I was told that it w as deemed uninhabitable because of damage done to the foundation during the August "trembler". Apparently it was already in poor condition-the original owner just neglected to tell me.

Having had lived in California for short periods in the 90's, I was accustomed to small quakes-but North East PA??!! When the quake happened, I had just been back from my most rececnt visit to the local hospital, (home away from home), for less than24hours and was just lying in bed contemplating a new project to start on, (to heck with my hip fracture-I had a headboard to make. When the quake started my first thought was "dammit, my neighbors in the studio apt, (the only other apt in the building), had gotten a washer & dryer-NOT good!! As the building, (a long, skinny building 3 stories high-the top floor had never been "finished", and was basically a dirty attack with resident bats-4 of them, which I eventually named. Don't ask-I'd held a "contest" on Facebook for my friends-many who are hyper-partisan, to name them. Use your imagination!! ;), jerked back and forth, I stormed down my 60ft hallway, out the door, and banged on my neighbors door-ignoring a note. "Out of town for a week or so". Uh oh...I ran back into my apt as things fell of shelves, grabbed my cat who's head was poked out from under my sheets-staring wide-eyed at my things falling, threw her in her "house", (fancy pet carrier), zipped it up & went down the stairs on my butt as fast as I possibly could-all with a broken hip & PJ's on. I went out the front door, then over to the side where there was a parking lot. (I lived literally on "Main St.", small town, USA). It was parking for a State Liquor store, and patrons were standing there staring at my building rocking back & forth. They couldn't feel the quake & had NO idea why this older lady had just run out of this rocking building in her PJ's carrying a cat carrier with a screaming cat inside. I DID try & tell them it was an earthquake, but most reactions were, "yea, right, and what have YOU been drinking??!!", (I don't drink, unfortunately, although I DID think about a glass of wine that day). One guy was sitting in his car, staring at the building, heard me, and took a swig from whatever was in his bag-muttering something about the "End of the World".
Anyways, back to being kicked out of my unstable building. One of the places I looked was Philly because there are actually Doctors there that are familiar with my genetic disorder which is causing so many of these problems. I'd decided to rent, because I anticipate having to move back to Florida in the next 10 years after my 90-something parents pass away. I looked at several of these "trinity homes", with elevators installed-however, the rent was over $3000/month and THAT didn't include the electric bill for the elevators!! The two I looked at were just 12-13ft across, and as the poster & commenter said, the kitchen was TINY, barely enough room for one person, and because it was in the basement, was VERY humid.
I'm still considering moving down there in the next 3 years or so, despite finding a nice, roomy, apt add-on to a farm house. I prefer the older buildings though-despite my challenges, there's nothing so fulfilling than renovating & preserving our history in these old family homes. ANY suggestions for areas of Phiily where I could find a nice, older apartment for less than$1500/month. (preferably NOT in "student" areas-no offense, I just have a very hard time sleeping because of dislocations!!) And Susan you've done a great job with this cute little historical gem!! elaine
