As a girl with an October birthday, I started school as a 5, almost 6-year-old, as the cutoff was Sept. 1. Eventually we moved states to one with a Dec. cutoff, and I ended up skipping a grade. By that point (3rd grade), I already saw myself as one of the smart kids and, did fine in school and loved being one of the younger kids in my class. But I think it depends on the child's readiness/maturity level and maybe on gender too. My younger brother had a November birthday, and my parents to this day (he's 25) have regretted starting him in school when he was 4. He just wasn't ready and was always getting into trouble because he wasn't as mature as his classmates. He usually had pretty understanding teachers, but he still struggled. That can be tough on a little kid's ego and sense of self worth. I have my own girl and boy - both October birthdays - and I'm not planning on starting either of them in school until they are 5.

Back to School Considerations: Redshirting

Behavior experts agree, the best way to deal with children's tantrums is to ignore them. There was even an NPR story recently on how the time a tantrum lasts is shorter when it's ignored. If a parent isn't responding to their screaming child, now you know why. They are doing their darndest to hold it together and ignore the bad behavior. Most moms I know hate having to take their kids to the store with them, but it's a necessary evil. A little compassion and understanding would go a long way.

Any idea where they got the small night stands/accent tables? I need some smaller scale night stands for my new bedroom!

It's pretty, yet for the holidays it leans more toward sad and cold.

I live in a similarly sized studio with my husband. The key to living comfortably, we've found, is furniture that can be made larger/smaller or provide multiple uses, based on our needs. The murphy bed is key (although I'd recommend finding one where you can hide storage above it) and makes the apartment feel really open and roomy. We also have a fold-out dining table that can seat 2 or 6, depending on the occasion. Our ottoman can be pushed flush with the wall to doubles as a bench for extra seating when we have guests. Be careful not to buy too much furniture or furniture that is too big and overpowers the space. Good luck. Looks like a great apartment!
