I have this same problem. I've found bout 3 safe spaces where I know grocery store bouquets and questionable centerpiece giveaways will be safe, but I manage to keep a surprising number of houseplants around. Anything living and green will help brighten and warm up your home.

The ASPCA in America has a great website that is a resource for toxic and non-toxic plant listings - http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/

Some safe pants to start with are African violets, spider plants, daisies, most succulents/cacti, and any true palms. There are also a number of ferns and common houseplants on the safe list so it doesn't have to be difficult or expensive to keep pets and plants safely in the same home.

Can someone tell me what the snack in the picture is? The credit just says it was taken by Faith, but not the subject. Thanks!

it has been my experience that you need to add the water to keep everything lubricated. My dad made 12-15 quarts of tomatillo salsa for family holiday gifts one year and burnt through 3 blenders and almost killed a 4th trying to process everything.

I have to go against the grain and say paint the doors in an eye catching color that fits your decor and do a graphic stencil (maybe spread/broken across the panels) in a lighter contrasting color - ie orange doors with white graphics.

I always wanted one of these from the Whole Earth catalog my parents had. At the time though they were far too expensive for my 8yo budget. Actually for a glass ball with shrimp they are still too expensive for my 25yo budget.

why so many sitting rooms? and where are the bedrooms? I too think it looks strange and cave-like. Something the characters from "Captain Eo" would enjoy I think.

why do you need to iron your sheets at all? you're just going to sleep in them and make them wrinkly.

You could always just fake it and only iron the part that folds over onto the comforter/duvet.

Also, if you put your sheets back on the bed when they are fresh out of the dryer they pretty much flatten themselves.

Seven days? Leftovers get 3 days in my house. Maybe 5 if they are vegan (like beans).

Ingredients last as long as they last. Veggies till they wilt/there is no chance for revival, meat till it turns color or picks up an off smell (though I will 99% of the time freeze to preserve before it gets there). Milk till it turns. Cheese lasts till hell freezes over as long as there is still some left after I cut off the wonky bit.

Jose A, that is the only way to go in my opinion.

Except for the straight on the gas burner option, none of these are best or correct, and number one is just sacrilege.

Would you microwave bread? No! Don't microwave a tortilla unless you want a dry, chewy, disgusting inedible frisbee. It takes 30 seconds to heat on the burner, tops, how fast do you need your tortillas that you need to use a microwave!

Bah! Just say no to the micro!

My CSA does grain/flour (good stuff too) and are super friendly. They are really into getting people to see how easy it is so I bet they would have good advice.

I feel like phoxx and powwlita are pretty much on to it, though I would add that the best beans need FAT.

I chop my onion and saute it with either veggie oil, bacon fat, or lard (lard is the best). Then I add the garlic (crushed well, not whole/smashed) to the hot oil/onions for a few seconds to get it going. Add the beans (soaked over night then drained/rinsed) and fresh water. Cook until soft. Low and slow this WILL take an hour an a half (or more), but that's how you get good beans with lots of flavor and a thick liquor.

@highlander403 - I would rather live in a world with flatulence than a world without bread and cheese (REAL bread and cheese - don't give me any of that gluten-free bread/soy cheese hoo-ha)

the website says that it will support up to 100 pounds, though I think that might be assuming that what you are hanging it from (ie your fence) also supports 100 pounds.

For anyone else with this question, if you decide to stick with the original style but want to sophisticate them a little, you could use one of the Aidells gourmet sausages. The Chicken and Apple flavour even comes in a minis size which is perfect for appetizers.

I want to say I will never eat another chicken nugget, but I know that's not true. I will just have to be more careful about the nuggets I buy. Maybe I'll stick to veggie "chick'n" nuggets.

If you can paint, I would recommend painting an accent wall. Painting the whole apartment would be too time consuming and expensive to do for only a 3 months stay, but an accent wall can brighten things up quickly while still being easy to turn back at the end of your term.

Also, art. Put up as much as you can, to save on frames perhaps look into alternatives here on AT like pants hangers , binder clips on strings/wires, or alligator clips.

keep out a few light blankets or quilts, it will be warm in FL, but they can be used in the evenings and soften the look of furniture.

Finally, PLANTS! since you will only be there a few months you may not want to invest in a full array of houseplants, but fresh flowers, or even a small pot with some annuals would be good. Or you could get a "real" houseplant and gift it to a friend when you leave after august.

I have never considered eating quiche cold. The idea of cold eggs makes me all squiggy... (no, I don't eat tamago either). Quiche is a warm dish in my book.

The cold salmon sounds like a great dish. The flavor is strong enough not to get lost when its cold, it can actually mellow it a bit.

A salad or salad bar also sound like great ideas.

Bahn Mi or other types of out of the ordinary sandwiches? (okay bahn mi aren't exactly new, but not everybody has eaten/heard of them and they could be an exotic choice for being made at home.
