I live in Chicago and have never lived in a garden apartment, but all of my friends who have done so have had issues with their garden apartments flooding.

Dan, check out the apartments through Kristalex Group (4518 North Damen). 4518-4528(?) N. Damen is a courtyard building and the management company is located on the ground level of 4518 1/2. This building has extra large/convertible studios (rent is less than $750/mo) and 1 bedrooms. It's a block and a half from the Damen Brown Line stop. I've lived in two different studios in this building for the past three years or so and have ONLY had good experiences. I think there are apartments for rent currently as well.

Good luck!

Just last night I was painting my kitchen/dining room teal, inspired by my vintage 50's table, a twin to yours! Now if only I could find awesome stools like yours, I'd be set! Looks awesome!

Weird, within the past year or so I've been obsessed with the purple/green color combo and, in fact, was going in that direction when looking at paint this weekend. Great inspiration!

Great timing on this post, I just moved into a new apartment and this weekend's project is looking at paint and colors. My large living room/bedroom has the most windows (east-facing), and has been causing me some consternation, but this has given me points to consider! Thanks!

I love how complete artfully undesigned it is. And I love the idea of using ladders as shelves and tables. Very cool!

I really like it, but just this morning I passed two pretty decent armchairs in the alley behind my apartment (well, decent in shape and condition) but couldn't help but wonder at their history. Bugs, urine, bodily fluids...I'd love to be adventurous enough to adopt alley finds, but I'm such a germophobe...I may have to go back and investigate...

Growing up, we had two subsequent sets of kitty siblings that would tear the fabric on the boxspring of my parents' bed and climb up into the box spring.

If we couldn't find them, we'd feel around under the bed for a warm, firm mass hanging from the box spring.

Once our golden retriever-german shepherd mix grew out of puppyhood, she claimed my father's recliner as her own. No human has sat there since. It was HER chair, the rest of us were left to sit on whatever other seating options are available.

23. I'm blaming the fact that my boss just got out of her meeting and I know I shouldn't be tooling around online. "No outside internet use!"

That does not explain my concentrated issues in the warm pinks and yellows.

My mother brings old newspapers to our local SPCA. When I volunteered there in years ago, we'd use them to line the cat cages. Might be worth making a call to your local shelter to see if they could use them!

I love the extra-long "night stand;" I have a low bed and would love to be able to have stacks of books and a lamp at just that height. Great idea!

I'll reiterate, thrift stores (search on Yelp) and Craigslist. Also, alleys. There's no rush to fully furnish her place, let her feel out what her needs will be. When I was in grad school (all of two years ago), I did most of my work at my large kitchen on my laptop. I had plenty of room to spread out my papers and books. A desk at that point wasn't really necessary.

It might also take her a while to get a sense of whether she wants to start investing in "keeper" pieces or whether she's happy with temporary, scavenged furniture that are cheap and functional.

It'll really be up to her to get a sense of how she needs her space to work.
