Lovely combo. This is an golden opportunity for my favorite colour move of the moment: layered cool and warm greens with gold and white. Mint/olive/gold. Or just pastels in general and gold with crisp white. I'm jealous!

I second the less is more. Paint it white to show off the panelling that white washed look and let the window, texture and light fixture be the point. Especially once the runner is in, you won't need anything more graphic. Besides, painting it all one colour is alot simpler to do in an awkward space, and getting too fancy just guarantees you will get annoyed and be back up there doing it over soon. Nice space!

What about oils? If furnishings are macronutrients, I would say oils are the art. Real, nourishing essential stuff.

Beige, tan and gold wall colours, but lighter, airier, and more nuanced. A backlash to cool grey and white.

A very beautiful more than white colour that is friendly with beige, grey and wood is BM Elmira White. It's reads white but has a hint of griege. Looks great with violets, greens, golds and blue.

Congratulations, I am sooo envious. Here's the thing, don't be too hasty abuot painting the walls white. If this is a ski chalet, you will want refuge from the glaring white snow. Even in the summer, who wants pristine white to keep clean in their holiday getaway? Besides, wood and rustic elements are all the rage. If it were me, I would focus on working with it and breaking it up with white or white ground, colourful patterned curtains, bright artwork. Maybe paint elements like the banister an rich vintage blue or red. Add lighting of all kinds. Think about how you can contrast the wood with colour and texture (hello awesome rugs!)

Good luck!

Ways To Modernize Pine Ceilings and Walls? Good Questions

My mom and I spent weeks designing, sewing and building lovely custom blackout blinds for the entire main floor of the house. They are great, but I wish I would have thought of cheating them up 6 or 8 inches to the cieling to give that elongating high window treatment look. That way, I could have a proportionate amount of them rolled down but let in tonnes more light. I might fix it some day...

What's Your Biggest Design Regret?

This room has great potential, but it looks a little generic. There are a few fixes that would make a big difference. First, the art is the soul of a room.

The piece over the couch is hung too high and seems to want to blend in shyly with the furniture, kind of bland. Get some real art with some real colour and hang it with the centre of the image at 56".

The rug is too small to pull the room together and a rug should be a great opportunity to introduce pattern and colour.

If you want to do the tone on tone neutral thing, I think it works best when you work with layering lights and darks, warms and cools, and texture. It's usually easier to go with more graphic colour and patterns in your art, rug and textiles to get the interest. Otherwise, you need organics (wood grain, stone, real plants), soft and fuzzy, hard and shiny (metal, glass), rough and smooth. Cool grays, warm creams etc. Old and new. More than one pillow. Maybe a throw. Those black and cream pillow shams from ikea (the sort of tribal looking ones) would give you some graphic pow.

You can introduce any colour scheme, the art and will determine the range (the current piece has you on a tight fear of colour leash). My advice is, find some art work (check your local art schools, ask friends there is always great work available for a reasonable price, trust me, I'm an artist). Make sure you love it and build the room around it. So much more powerful than the other way around.

Best of luck and thanks for sharing!

What's Needed in This Room? Good Questions

I strongly second the no white for the walls vote. I have a low light living room which I struggled with. White or cool light colours look really shadowy, dingy and gloomy. If you pick a light colour go with warm undertones. Depends on your taste whether yellow or peach/ pink. I've got bm papaya and love it, but I have rich wood floors offset with golds, blues and greens. You really should see if you can paint the floors. Be sure to incorporate a pattern or stick with a midtone or you will see EVERYTHING. Best of luck!

Renter-Friendly Color with Dark Flooring? Good Questions

Gorgeous! Your house is exceptional because it is built on modern bones but avoids all the stark off-the-shelf impersonal badness that this style has come to represent for me. So refreshing.

It is often assumed that pastels require soft grey or alot of white to set them off. Try pastels with rich colours. I've got a deep gold brown wall colour (ralph lauren prince) looks fab with yellow, pink, mint and lavender.

Trend Spotting: Modern Pastels

Nice room, really needs textiles. I think you should do a creamy curtain on the heavier (more tailored) side with a wide dark strip at the bottom to reflect the beams and the heavier feel of the couch. Move the curtain rod up near the cieling. Wish I had an actual pair to recommend, best of luck.

The best way to create an interesting space is to mix styles shamelessly. Just put 'em up, and then deal with how they will make you want to mix it up in the rest of the space.

Incorporating Woodsy Quilts Into Modern Decor? Good Questions

I'm feeling a painted floor with a bold patterned stencil, much more interesting and forgiving to keep clean than solid or (eek) white. I would warm it up with dark walls (probably a grayed out navy) and some mustard (or deep) yellow. The white walls are too cold unless you are in a very hot climate and dark walls make a bathroom cozy and luxe.
