Nope. Although I am more than comfortable in my tiny 388 sq ft condo, I don't think I could ever live in one of those lockers! Could You Live in a 16 Square Foot Apartment? |

Have to agree; I live in Toronto and 30% seems incredibly low. I'd love to find a decent place for 30% my salary. My rent is going up in April and sadly I've just calculated it at 45% of my take-home pay... ouch! I'm probably not saving as much as I ought to be, but I'm paying all my bills and contributing to my RRSP every month, so it works for me for the time being. I've lived in a number of shiny glass condo buildings in Toronto, but my favourite rental was a 1 bedroom basement walk-out in a million dollar, century old house in a mature neighbourhood. It was newly renovated by a young couple who'd just bought the house, so I was the first ever renter and everything was nice, new and clean. It was my first apartment alone, without any roommates, so it really felt like my own space. The landlords were wonderful, the backyard was beautiful, the neighbourhood was ultra-convenient, and the unit had laundry, an ensuite, a dishwasher, central air, and a central vacuum system to boot! It was, for all intents and purposes a basement, but with all those little perks it felt pretty posh. I stayed for two years, and would probably still be there today if the couple hadn't started a family and wanted to take back over their space. Tell Us: What Was The Best Rental You've Ever Had? |

To be honest, I didn't even mind the "before" too terribly much, aside from the floors, the over-sized furniture and the bit of clutter. But the end result is great; bamboo floors look stunning. Well done fellow Torontonian. Before & After: Richard's Toronto Studio Redesign |

Prescription antihistamines (not advocating prescription drug use just for the sake of it, but I've always had trouble falling asleep and it's just a nice coincidence that my doctor-prescribed antihistamine is also known to help induce sleep and treat mild anxiety.) I say go for it; alter them to better suit your style and needs. Without trying to be insensitive: it's just furniture, it's not the memory of your grandparents themselves (I can see there being more of a dilemma if the furniture was made by a grandparent or relative, but you did say they bought it.) I happen to agree with those above who have said your grandfather would proably be honoured that you have repurposed it and are using it every day, rather than selling it or tucking it away somewhere. I agree. I moved to a new apartment almost three months and have been making my bed every day. It's a studio, so the bed is somewhat of an unavoidable focal point. I feel relieved when I come home from work to my tidy apartment. On the few occasions when I have been "too rushed" in the morning to bother, I feel noticeably frazzled when I enter and see my disheveled living space. Make Your Bed!
