I don't sleep well unless the room is as dark as possible and noise free. Earplugs will eliminate the noise if necessary; and as far as darkness, even the digital display from the clock radio is annoying to me so I cover it with a washcloth. Unfortunately, due to having a small apartment, my computer is in my bedroom, meaning the modem is as well and it has blinking lights that I cover with a hand towel.

I used room darkening drapes that help a lot!

I cannot sleep with anyone...give me the freedom of the bed all to myself!

Playing your stereo, or your tv so loud that your neighbors can hear it through the walls or floors is NEVER appropriate! Only immature and selfish people do that. If you insist on living in a noise impacted apartment, plan on having your neighbors, the LL, or the police knocking on your door until you grow up and turn down the noise.
