This is an excellent analogy: "It's exactly like buying pre-faded, pre-ripped jeans. It's exactly inauthentic." I have to agree.
However, this is not about the "working poor or laid-off workers." Please. I believe the aim in having an un-polished, not blatantly ostentatious "bling" ridden granited-up-crap house is more to have the feel of, say, a rich French land owner look from 100 years ago; how does this relate to the working poor?
And anyway, why so angry about rich people?! Wouldn't you want to be one? I would! I make us$30k year. I am better off than most of the people in the world, does that disabuse me of the right to have a certain kind of taste? Am I doomed to spend every cent I have for plastic shit that looks like everyone else's? NO! And even though us$30k is more than many in the world will ever make in their lifetimes, if I lost 1/2 of it, I would most definitely feel like I was not in control of my fate.
Slowdown, slowdown.

This is not about "slumming"! It's just a certain aesthetic. I've always wanted to have a worn down leather couch. Does that REALLY mean I'm trying to embrace "homeless chic"? NO! I saw one in a swanky house in London years ago and thought it was cool!
This is not "trying to look poor", it's not "mockery."
Back down, people, we're talking about style here, not class warfare. Just because we're all jealous and want to be able to afford Francois Halard's life, doesn't mean it's not gorgeous.

I am surprised at the anger in all of these comments!
That room is gorgeous, the ideas expressed in the post are good ones.
I would have an aga range if I could and put it in a room just like that if I could.
While I agree this is not a "trend" (obviously not), it is an exploration of a certain kind of style. Witness the torn bedspreads in World of Interiors -- not there for show, but because it's someone's real room. It's eccentric and interesting and very beautiful.

I always bring one large bag and check it in. It's practically empty on the way there and stuffed on the way home. I've tried bringing a small bag and with a empty duffel to fill with purchases, but then having 2 bags is cumbersome to get on trains and buses and gives you more stuff to look after. Plus, you have to check one of them on the return trip anyway. I like being streamlined with one large bag with room to spare...

lorisf: that's a great find. Sad but true if you look at the US economy stats. Perhaps if we sold those in the bookstore I work in we'd be able to survive.

I keep things I never want to spend a dime replacing. The problem is when you have so much stuff you can't find what you need and end up spending to replace it anyway. That is the catch-22 with most pack rats. An endlessly perpetuating cycle. If you are going to keep things, try to be organized.

Those of you that "hoard"/keep for re-sale, keep in mind that you are not an expert in the field. You likely won't fetch prices you have seen in auctions or from reputable dealers. You might be lucky to sell your stuff to such dealers for 50% or 60% percent of retail value, but it's unlikely that you will be able to fetch "retail" prices yourself.

Why do you need a garbage bag? Just put your garbage in the bin and dump the bin directly into the outdoor container that is collected. You can rinse out your bin if it gets dirty.
No one should have to buy plastic liners...

After 18 years, I was forced to move (evicted -sorry, it was pretty dramatic) so my landlord could move into my apartment.
It's their right, even though it was inco. The thing that made me furious was that rather than let us know that they planned to do this (when, for example, they filed papers with the city of LA 1 year before it happened), they waited to give us 30 days notice.
30 days notice after living there for 18 years? not very nice.

We keep ours in a bag in the freezer and then take them down (in our case to a municipal green bin for composting) when we take out the trash.

To those who object to the way these people spent their money and what they do with their possesions: you have a problem. It's their money, they can do what they want with it. To each his own.
To those who object to the "power" the kids have: you have no idea what goes on in this family, what the rules are, what the boundaries are. Get over yourselves.
To those that simply dislike the decorating style: good for you. Again, to each his own.

re: antlers being found
It's true, however, if you are REALLY going to be a staunch environmentalist, remember that other creatures feed on antlers that have been shed. Even by taking shed antlers, you are disturbing the eco-system.
FYI.
I do love the way they look, though!
