PhyllisC, so well put, both your painting tutorial and your thoughts on vintage refurbishing. Too bad you didn't have a chance to weigh in while the fur was flying last week. I t might have calmed the waters.

This really isn't presented to best advantage here. Would you be allowed to resubmit your entry with more photos that more accurately represent the color pallette?

Putting the year of the home's construction on the bathroom floor reminds me of the same practice on the slate roofs of the barns around where I grew up in Ohio. My sisters and I used to look out for them and "collect" them when we were out and around with our dad. The oldest was 1877 and the most recent 1927. Just an aside.
I absolutely love the renovation and the styling. Also, the story of past residents relating their happiness in the house. It certainly looks as if the house will continue to provide this for future occupants.

I really like how you used the color that was already there (at least the pink0. This whole room displays such flair and confidence.

I don't mind that this is on here. Wisdom and inspiration are where you find them whether it's ancient texts, sitcoms, an encounter or conversation with a stranger in a store or on the bus or unexpected posts on Apartment Therapy. Being alert to them is part of mindful living so not inappropriate here.

I like seeing this kind of "Early American" furniture being revamped. There's so much of it out there and a lot if is very well constructed and durable. Painting it seems to be about the only way to bring it up to date for today's styles and tastes. And I'm one who usually prefers to avoid painting nice wood which a lot of this style often is (usually maple).

I looked at the pictures before I read the text and knew my comment would focus on the fabulous array of lamps. I laughed out loud reading that this tour started out a a survey of the lamp collection. Lamp heaven, also the best reading rainbow ever since it actually seems to make sense here more than usual. Also, really like all the Matisse prints and how the window bars have been turned into a decorative asset instead of a dreary liability.

I love the unexpectedness of that oh-so-elegant wallpaper in the kitchen and the overall concept and practice of "designing around" oddities, quirks and flaws. That is what most of us have to do and probably always will have to do. Fun and inspiring to see it done so effectively.Covet those oak with green leather or vinyl family heirloom chairs at the desks!
Second (or third?) to those praising the effective use of mass market items. Most of us can't afford or don't even like designer stuff and vintage and antiques are in limited supply. Part of the charm of this house is the way that the new items have been blended with their antique and vintage items or own creations. This is the way it has to work for people of real means , especially if they're raising kids.

And by the way I like this house and furniture, admire and appreciate the Japanese esthetic and the amount of discipline and restraint that required to achieve and maintain it.

Glad to so many comments calling Rural and Rueful out on her tactless comment. My grand nieces and grand nephews are the grandchildren of my sisters. I don't think that is such a distant releationship even biologically. I don't have any idea why this is so bothersome to you or even matters as an earlier commenter pointed out.

This so uplifting and inspiring. Everybody fighting over the before and after lamp needs to look at this for some perspective.
A few years ago in my oldest sister's little village in Ohio the townsfolk and area contractors and retailers did a home makeover for a pair of elderly siblings who lived in a withdrawn and secluded manner when it was discovered the extreme state of disrepair that their home had fallen into. My niece's husband was one of the participating contractore (drywall) and my brother-in-law's service station was a donation collection point. We need to remember that this kind of helpfulness, generosity and kindness are not things of the supposedly more "golden, olden days" but are still practiced more frequently than we informed through news media. Knowing about these sort of efforts gives hope.

I thought I'd carried home some challenging items on my or the bus, but if the medicine cabinet referred to is the one in the living room corner behind the sofa then Michael wins!
Since so many are using "Mad Men" as shorthand to describe a look these days, I'd say this house is "The Waltons meet Mad Men'. With very happy results.....

Fledgling, I second your remarks about the positives of this type of housing. In Denver we are sadly losing whole neighborhoods of these type of affodable house to McMansion and bowling alley scaled duplexes and triplexes crammed onto single lots. And the people who buy them seem to stay no more than three years before they're up for sale again at some ridiculously high price.
I second also much of the praise already offered (kitchen, color choices, bathroom toilet surround). I found the treatment of the exterior especially appealing. I may see how I could adapt the paint color scheme and landscaping choices for my place. Sadly, I have no room to copy or adapt that gorgeous back porch.
The overall feeling of this tour reminded me of the little Oregon farmhouse rental featured just a few days ago. Although this is a much more designed, finished and polished space the common thread is the feeling of disciplined but calm and not uptight tidiness that doesn't seem fussy and obsessive but serves to support the orderly and happy lives of the occupants.
