What are you using for under-bed storage? We currently have plastic bins and I hate how they look! Your solution looks much prettier!

Oh, and I have an outdoor "office" (converted garden shed) that helps me focus when I work from home now, so maybe that will help in the future too!

I've still got a few years to go before having kids, but am hoping to creating some kind of balanced working from home situation. My saintly parents will provide two solid days of childcare when I can go into the office (a small-ish history museum). Then, I'm hoping to get somewhere between 16 and 24 hours of work in the other three days. Luckily, my husband is studying to be a teacher, so can hopefully take over the childcare by 4pm each day. It sounds like it will work in my head, but who knows? Wish me luck!

As previously mentioned, her son is 17 or 18, so this is really an storage method so he can keep the Legos until he feels ready to get rid of them. Go easy!

@JDOEY, I think both terms are widely used and accepted in the U.S. It may not be consistent for the author to use both in the same post, but it's certainly not wrong.

One current academic and one former academic in our house (the former has a linguistics degree, but studying to be a math teacher and the latter has history degrees and works in history museums), so we've got a good amount of books to tackle (probably ~700). We have 6 bookshelves in our fairly large living room, lining two walls (with a window between the largest ones). We got 5 of them at Target and one is an IKEA BILLY. We also have a tall skinny BILLY in the dining room for cookbooks and an older bookshelf that's like an EXPEDIT in the guest room for oversized volumes and eventual kids' books.

Most things are alphabetized by author, except for the cookbooks and guest room books. Those are roughly organized by size and subject.

We also have a dear friend and current academic who we helped build bookshelves of 2' x 4's and brick stacks between. They look pretty good and allow for easy subject groupings between the brick stacks. Also, they're very easy to break down and/or rearrange as needed.

We're building a patio this spring and summer and we picked herringbone for the timelessness factor, too. :)

Looks great! Definitely smart to tuck everything into a small space of its own. My husband used to work at the couch and spread out his papers on the ottoman. Drove me insane. ;) We're both much happier now that he's using the desk in the guest room.

Oh and Melissa, I was a few years behind you in high school and did not realize you started Shoestring! Well done! :)

I think this is probably fairly impractical for home use, but I work in history museums and kind of love the idea of this for an exhibit on preservation, gardening/agricultural life, etc.

We just took the table, 2 armchairs, the bench, and a sectional in this series home from our local IKEA (Massachusetts) on Tuesday! I called and was told that all the outdoor furniture would be in our local store by 3/31, which was good to know, as it still shows up as not for sale online. I'd call your local store to have them check for you - they seem to know more than the website.
