I agree, much improved! I've found great stone scraps at rebuilding centers in my city (Portland) for next to nothing.

I think that it totally depends on your personal preference. If you're someone who likes things that show wear or patina over time then it might work for you. I personally notice every scratch and mark so it would drive me crazy.

I agree with what others have said above, engineered quartz would be a great alternative for the counters. However, I couldn't agree with your pro's more and marble in a bathroom is just stunning. Your backsplash is going to get much less wear and tear than the counters so what about including it there?

I agree with the first comment. Gray on the walls and white trim will do the trick! Good luck on your painting project.

@Discerning, Just commenting that I loved the budget project, especially for something that is a trend...and will go out of style. I'm by no means trying to judge how people spend their money on design. If someone loves the original and they have the cash for it - more power to them!

What a great little project! Thank you for sharing. It's hard to imagine spending the dough on the original knowing that it's not going to be in style forever...I lived through the 80's :).

What a great little project! Maybe you already have this and it's hidden, but I think a little desk lamp with a pop of color could be a great addition. Again, nice job and thanks for sharing.

If your budget is super tights, I agree that white subway tiles are a great way to go. If you want to go for something a little more unique, there are some great pictures circulating the web with white subway tiles and a black-ish grout.

If you have a little more money to spend I would go with a white marble 3"x6" tile (super reasonable at home depot! - http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100664302/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=marble&storeId=10051)

Either way I love the idea of a soft gray/blue for the walls. Also, if you could swap out your hardware it would make a huge difference. Ikea has some great options to check out. Good luck with your project.

Do you know what the sub floor is? If it is concrete it would probably be pretty easy for a contractor to give it some new life. They could also pour a leveling layer of concrete if the existing floor is uneven.

I recently worked on a project where we installed concrete counter-tops. The price was comparable to a stone installation...not as cheap as one might think. Another option might be to do a porcelain tile. There are some really great options out there right now that are large format tiles and have a great concrete look.

Good luck with your project!
