I totally expected a general uproar and indignant stamping of feet....

Personally, I think this idea has merit.

As a work at home mamma with three little ones, two of whom are in school and take their lunches regularly: it doesn't hurt to occasionally do something special for your little ones' lunches... it doesn't really take that much extra time, and making your child feel loved and special in the harsh reality of school is invaluable.

I agree that giving your "PB&J every-day" child something unfamiliar just out of the blue is probably not a good idea unless it's been road tested at home and approved.

To the negative commenters: "Playing with texture" and "using color" are just part of good meal planning and shouldn't be an issue.

To Sarahrae: playing the cafeteria's game is a great idea if you have children who are sensitive to being "different" from the rest of their classmates.

I would like to make an additional suggestion however; the judicious use of creative sandwich cutting is always a winner in my house. We use both cookie cutters and those sandwich bread sized sandwich cutters (that look like monsters, or dinosaurs, or hearts - the kids get to pick that day) to make fun shapes of their daily sandwiches, and it only takes 10 more seconds to do.

Fortunately, my children aren't as affected by public opinion and eat, wear, and play what they want, regardless of what their classmates say.

I have a wooden bowl full of my daughter's dinosaur collection on my dining room tabletop. We switch them out with the kids' rock collection and sometimes my son's many (many) matchbox cars. It's fun for them and makes a great conversation item when we have guests. (And the inevitable Firefly "This is a good land" re-enactment. We're exposing our children to the best of nerd-dom.)

Obviously, the above negative posters have never heard of dramatic voice and/or irony? Anyone who claims to not have a stereotypical reaction or thought (whether conscious or not) is not entirely truthful to themselves. Humans are pigeon-holers, category-makers, namers-of-things. She obviously didn't act on her thoughts or reactions or we would have been reading about how she went screaming into the night. Instead we read about her experience, which wouldn't have read as truly if she wasn't a little apprehensive about a new adventure. I applaud Sarahrae's willingness to admit her humanity and not allow "commenter-pressure" to make her write like someone she's not.

Using them in the kitchen is a great idea, Sarahrae! It would be a great place to stow all of my King Arthur Flour Baking Sheets and my monthly menus and their corresponding recipes! Another great idea, thanks!!!

@austinsarah: When I purchased that curtain, it had three little holes in it, right down the center. Rather than do a very noticeable patch job, I decided to give this little cloth a new life as something that I can look at every day, instead of letting it languish in the bottom of my sideboard drawer.

The clock: found at an auction for practically nothing.

The result, a cheery kitchen for my post-war built house.

The last picture makes my feet hurt. Scary but very, very cool design. And, and! skate decks as stairs... awesome idea!
Fun website... makes me want to tear out the too shallow, too steep stairs going up to my bedroom and put in a spiral staircase or something.
Thanks Sarahrae!

I agree completely with "RockTheHotBox": Sarahrae's posts don't have to be mainstream hip to be informative and inspiring. Though not all of this artwork is to my decorating taste, I can still appreciate the work and thought that went into each piece. (BTW, love the Riki Blanco pieces!)

@ closertotheocean and K T G: if you can't say something nice or at the very least politely constructive, keep your opinions to yourself -- rudeness improves no one and shows your lack of open-mindedness.

It's always fun to add the unexpected to your decorating, and lacquer red busts of composers take the cake! Thanks for your ideas!

Great post SarahRae! Thanks for the auction tips and the glimpse at KC area decorating potential. You're putting the "Midwest" in the Midwestern Modern movement! As a fellow plains states dweller, I appreciate getting to see other decorating/lifestyle sources than the local *-Mart.

Thanks again!
