What about painting the floors and cabinets a high gloss white? You'd still have the contrast with your mod furnishings but you'd also have a more contemporary tie-in.

Oh, and even though we bought all three units at the same time, 2 sets of shelves have a nice, sanded finish on the tops and edges, but one set is very rough and unfinished. We should have taken it back but they were such a PITA to assemble that we decided against it.

The ones from Wal-Mart (like those pictured right) are incredibly flimsy. My husband's vocabulary during assembly was more colorful than usual, and we had to screw our three units into the wall for added stability because they wouldn't be very safe (especially around children) if they were just free standing. They were only $30 a piece for us, but for a long term product, we should have spent more for the ones at Lowe's. Wal-Mart's seem more like aluminum than steel.

My son is at the planes, trains, and automobiles stage, too, so I noticed some bedding with that motif in a PB Kids catalog. It's on sale online (www.potterybarnkids.com) right now. Maybe some sheets would be a better (cheaper) option until this phase (hopefully) passes.

Or could you just buy some cheap canvases and make something inspired by Dwell or the Jeeto (www.jeeto.com/homecollection.html) lines? I can't bring myself to spend much money on anything transportation related so I opted for DIY artwork that I won't mind tossing for his next craze.

My local DAV thrift store had those chairs in a variety of colors for $25 each. I think you would have the most luck secondhand.

Am I the only fan of Pushing Daisies who loves the pie diner idea? A slice of pie and some hot coffee after a hard day or long night would be a nice way to wind down. Sure, they don't have the portability of cup cakes, but they more than make up for it in variety.

I love the single-legged base! With a second child due any day now, I'd love to win another seat and toss my Not-so Space Saver from FP!

My roommate and I did this in college to make an entire wall red. We had trouble with fraying edges though. I have to wonder if using a fusible webbing or something similar would help make smaller uses more durable.

I love the Mod Dot collection. I wish I had seen it before my first boy arrived; I'm out of love with his bedding but have no excuse to buy another for this second child--it's another boy!
