Thanks for sharing. It's a lovely place, it's got personality and lightness. I was wondering about the exposed beams in the kitchen. Don't you freeze there at night in that good old SF weather? Does the kitchen walls have good insulation?

Very inspiring home! I enjoyed the balance the grown ups have created in the common areas (and the backyard!) but really liked seeing the girls' rooms -- there's a sweet honesty there coupled with their parents' style, of course. Loved it! Thanks for sharing!!

He's got style - and he knows... ;-)

Liked the tour, thanks AT. There's something about spareness of it that, coupled with so much light, makes it for a very calm environment. calm environment. I like that. After reading the owner's comments, this tour got even more enjoyable because the house seems to have evolved with purpose and cohesion. Not my personal style, but I can see this man written on it.

Are the pastries real?
How can someone not like this place, there's so much character and it's very cohesive. You guys covered up the less than desirable kitchen marks very well, creating a focal point ( blue spoon/fork combo) and making the white cabinets pop against a dark background. Clever!! I do have to say that I was a bit surprised by the centrality of the TV in your living room -- openly and honestly there, but sort of...too obtrusive, visually speaking. Yet, functionality and comfort, not just eye popping colors/art are important to you. So perhaps the TV thing is just a pet-peeve of mine... Great home, thanks for sharing!

Our kitchen is ikea. We also hired an Ikea cabinet installer, making it easier for us, because it's not that uncomplicated to instal a kitchen...it was fast and it came out great. We got the white Lindigo.

However, in order to "elevate" the kitchen, we purchased high end fridge/microwave/stove, fixtures out of another catalogue, and the floors were redone too. In other words, we saved on the kitchen cabs, and the end result is really well put together. The laminate of the cabs will have wear and tear, but the overall design is very "within reach" and is practical, i.e., spring in the hinges so your doors and drawers will shut gently, nice inserts so you'll never have to reach out to grab your pots, etc.

We also made sure to mix contemporary and vintage, we like that mix. Lindigo is a vintage looking kitchen, so our appliances are stainless steel, the countertop was a modern-lookinng composite (Raven, also sold by Ikea) rather than granite, and the flooring is modern too. Overall really happy with my Ikea kitchen. It's functional and lovely! Go for it!!

Guys, you have style. You have an eye for a neutral palette where you can just go explore with the trinkets you find, the one-of-a-kind object, the plants (what kind of indoor tree is that, BTW, I have always loved it!) Being on a budget just screams to me how creative, mindful and experimental you are, in other words be proud you are not recreating a catalogue! And the fact that you kept is "spare" makes the unique objects really pop, makes me want to take a house tour and ask you, oh-where-did-you-get-that? Oh-was-that-your-mother's? Your daugther's bed is ephemeral and it goes sooo well with that painting because it clashes, it moves away from the blahness of same-same-matchy-matchy styles. I can't believe what you did with her Ikea shelf -- did you paint it and pasted doilies on it, please tell, it's adorable! Or is it fabric? What else??Too many cute and interesting details to mention, I loved it, even though my personal style involves more bright colors, it was a pleasure to drink my coffee this morning and see your home! Thanks for showing your nest

Great job! The strategic placement of curtains, their color and the new bed together transform the room. The old bed wouldn't have been saved by the curtains alone...it had to go.

The absence of rugs and the clever placement of prints on floors, desks, etc (i.e., no excessive paintings/prints on the walls) do make an impact as far as spaciousness. I think this is a very nice place -- the orangish red is amaaazing! So crisp and it makes an otherwise banal wall seem like part of an art gallery. Well done, guys!

Interesting place. Yes, just like everyone, the scythe caught my eye and I had to go back to see it a few times over because it doesn't look fake at all from these pics! Regardless, I thought that this house is filled with humor, irreverence and a bit of darkness(maybe it's the scythe... what can I say!) It is not my personal style but I see "character" written all over the place, it has personality, it makes me wanna meet these people. Who would think of hanging old cabinets over the fireplace? And they pulled it off!
@deon marais - "strange people's homes..." what does that mean? They seem to have a unique taste and object consistency throughout their home. You may not like it, but dismiss it all together suggests your taste is on the rigid side. blah.

I enjoyed reading about your experience. It felt honest. I can tell you mix well too, as your inspiring boss. I can imagine how working for this industry may impact the way the house is "livable" -- I didn't find much of this livability in the photos, they appeared staged (well, AT was photographing it, of course, I get it) and I wonder if it feels as beautiful when it gets a little messy (hope so!)

Not my personal style but I enjoyed the tour. One very cool detail - the way you grouped the window frames on the wall (really interesting!) The kitchen remodeling was also great -- thanks for the before/after pics; don't we all love that kind of transformation??
I also have to say that this home screams "woman" to me..I do wonder how much input your husband had, if at all important to you (perhaps he did, perhaps he didn't care, but it is, to me, a very feminine -- pretty -- home.)

For crying out loud many times over in the wee hours: let this mom have a moment of glamour because she knows, oh, she knows she'll be sleepless and tired and irritable. So let her have a beautifully adorned nursery, it's so unique!

Initially I thought that the consistent gray palette would need more colorful moments throughout the house - but that would be...my house. Your house is beautiful and shows thoughtfulness without monotony. I love the way your wall gallery created symmetry with the sofa's modern lines, and the cleverly paired round mirror with a bunch of little squares, and how wonderful is that print with the foreheads on your mantel. Very inspiring!! The outside shot shows your good taste as well -- I'd never thought I'd see black garage doors, but it totally worked!

I thought it was a little funny that the owner appeared more than just once in the pics, but perhaps AT wanted to connect the dots for us (owner's style = house's style, even though it had already been said in the text.) I really enjoyed the tour. The house has lots of character, and I so appreciate these unique tours. Thank you!
