I found an even easier way to do this... Purchase some plastic film from the craft store (the kind you would use for making windows "clings"), trace out the proper diameter for your lens or filter, then cut or punch out a hole in the center. Very quick and easy to put on a lens and easy to store and transport.
For some creative shapes I stole my wife's scrapbook hole punches.
