My parents did this in a number of places in their house. In the bathroom they made a sunken space and put in towel rods and shelves. Elsewhere in the house they became paperback book shelves. My favorite of these book cases was in the half-wall in the landing at the top of a staircase. It was a half-wall instead of a banister. I had my bed in the closet for a year or two around junior high. I LOVED it. And, it wasn't like a nice walk-in closed I've seen comments about. Mine was a standard 2'x10' closet with sliding doors. My parents put a dresser in the middle and long boards that were supported by shelves on each end and the dresser in the middle. For the mattress, they bought a big piece of foam core and cut the width to fit. I had shelves at either end for odds and ends (clock, books, etc.) I slept about 30" off the floor either with the doors open or closed (I loved closed). Eventually the 24" width made it hard to stay but it was great while it lasted. I've often thought about making another "sanctuary" in a closet. Is it OK for Kids to Sleep in the Closet? |
