Am I the only person who thinks ... 999 square feet? COME ON. Of course this is amazing, it doesn't need to be squeaked into Small Cool to get a house tour.

You guys are a bunch of irrational, judgmental babies.

When I stay at hotels it's a treat. Slap on some crisp white sheets and a used mattress is no different. For all the New Yorkers afraid of bed bugs, don't you have a bed bug cover on your mattress anyway? I would rather buy a mattress from someone who will let you into their home and look you in the eye than a Sleepy's salesman. People claim they got bedbugs that way too.

I could afford a fancy new mattress, but I'm the sort of person who would sleep on hardwood if left to my own devices. I simply don't need one. To the person who suggested we ought to work three jobs to make the money -- Jesus Christ, get a grip.

Seriously, AT commenters are a bunch of wet blankets. Can you paint? Paint your doors black to make your walls look more interesting in contrast. Your white trim is what makes it look so dark, but painting the trim would not be worth it. And curtains would be prohibitively expensive, even if you make them. Collect lots of cheap art and go crazy -- I think the carpet will recede into the background. If you don't have white furniture, thrift some and paint it. Put lights everywhere and it will glow.

LOL @ Heather! I do enjoy a glass of capers ... but only if we're drunk and eating them with leftover pate and stale baguette. And he says he doesn't entertain!

Go to thrift stores. Make a point to stop into one every time you pass by, or once a week. Sign up for Freecycle. Be patient.

I really like the Salvation Army "super centers" and Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

Freecycle is amazing. I held out for a long time (Yahoo lists? I mean really?) but broke down and tried it when I couldn't give things away on Craigslist. At least in northern NJ, people are reliable and nice!

I don't know the solution (don't drink coffee?), but also commenting in support of the OP. If you got approved for the apartment and you can afford it, you're way ahead of the game. Congrats on your new place!

Ooof.

When I first got my place I was embarrassed to decorate with personal things instead of art I bought. I guess I felt like real grown-ups naturally WANTED and ended up with an apartment that was full of these "propped" things, and if I didn't, I wasn't grown up enough.

I just did this on an existing frame from a thrift store. I painted over the random dude's photo (sorry random dude!) with black paint, then duct-taped dollar store crayons to the top and melted them with my hair dryer on "hot" and "low". I tossed the crayons when I was done.

It looks great, but next time I would definitely use Crayolas like Pixelbaby suggests. The dollar store crayons were really watery and I had to build up a LOT of wax to get a good color payoff. The texture looks kind of cool too, though.

Love the lights. Sure they're tacky, but who cares? You know whoever put them in thinks it's Christmas every time they take a bath.
