UGH. After swearing of AT for good, I ended up here through a Lifehacker link. The reason I swore off this blog for good is that the message boards are ridiculous when someone has a "negative" opinion or reaction to a blog post. I have been subverting my OCD when I see a little dust and gunk in the crevices of the washing machine - it's just not worth my time to get every nook and cranny squeaky clean. KHinNJ, your comment made me laugh. I wish people would lighten up, it's really frustrating to see backlash against anyone who doesn't praise every word of AT.

That said, I do appreciate this article because I noticed a bit of a funky smell from my 12-year-old machine and I'm going to clean it. From the comments section you'd think we were all debating politics or something. SHEESH.

Charlotte, I think YOU are awesome. Thank you for the comment - I feel better knowing that just because I don't love the blue chevron, I haven't offended. :) (I clicked through to your blog and love some of the stuff and you're so creative.)

Mary E., well said. A respectful discussion of individual tastes SHOULD be part of a design blog. After looking at this string, I think I'd rather just move on and not be part of this community. If I want a series of comments saying only "Yay, Fabulous, Love!" then I'll just go to pinterest. (I haven't typically had much time to spend on this site but have come across a few threads I found really interesting with respect to people's personal styles.) If people (not trolls) aren't free to discuss likes and dislikes then I don't see the point.

My anniversary is the following week, so my husband and I have always celebrated V-day with homemade dinner. Some years we've gone all out with the cooking and other years we've made a simple take-home-and-heat dinner. We get to be romantic and still have a fancy dinner somewhere fabulous for our anniversary. (And this year Toy Fair is interfering so I'm glad it's not a big deal to us.)

In my younger years, I was SO excited to eat at "the most romantic" restaurant in LA and we got a mediocre prix fixe, sardined in elbow-to-elbow, and were rushed through the meal. Never again. People do seem to be sick of the hype. My good friends celebrate Valentine's on Aug 14 (the half-year away).

OMG OMG OMG. I love it so much I may add a small, windowless room onto my house. ;-) But stunning. LOLing at Patrick's response to the 80s comment. All I remember about 80s decor was beige walls and flamingos.

Mary E., dark grey would be interesting. (My deleted post was that I agree with williamsweyr about black and white, or gray. That would have been cool to see.) I would NEVER attempt this kind of a project; I'll agree with the time and talent displayed. My skills (and interest) in upholstery projects are limited to dropping something off at the foam and fabric store. Haha. Having said that, I think the finished project looks a bit... homemade. And I think I feel that way because of the color and fabric choice. Just my opinion, of course.

My comment that "it's not working for me" was deleted?? I was trying to agree with other commenters about the color choice. HMPH.

OMG YES, I love St Germain. For the holidays, I really like a bourbon cider punch. Last year I found a great recipe - it sits on the stove so no mixing/mess. Our guests loved it.

@dolcevita, let's take it down a notch.

I refuse to cook for my best friend's son with a peanut allergy. Not that I wouldn't love to accommodate, but simply because if I make an error HE WILL DIE. They always come with food.

Entertaining my husband's family is often stressful because there are several who are gluten-free and casein free (health reasons), a few who are intolerant of diary, a few with celiac disease.... Another comment mentioned grilled meats and veggies, which is what we always do -- but even the marinade can have gluten. We make every effort to serve food for everyone but it gets really rough to create a meal with limited ingredients. (We pretty much always have the same menu with limited variations.) In the end, it's about the company and not what we eat, it would just be nice to have some new meals!

Haha, I'm with JDAD. I had a baby long after most my friends' kids were toddlers so I got tons of hand-me-downs. They are in every stage for so short a period of time, I just don't understand many of the splurges. That said, if you're planning multiple children I guess it's nice to buy quality and keep. For me, everything is on the cheap until we buy his "permanent" furniture (e.g., the dresser that he uses from age 3 or 4 through 23 or 24.)

I know it's a lot of wood - it's too much for me, but I DON'T LIVE IN A BEAUTIFUL VERMONT CABIN. I vote don't paint. There are a lot of excellent tips already to minimize allll that wood, but a cabin-feeling dorm for visiting guests in Vermont is just charming.

I'm a bed-maker (usually, not always) and this post reminded me of a conversation with my husband a few months ago.
Me (pointedly as I made the bed): You know, I read an article that said people who make their bed are happier.
Husband: Yeah? Well they didn't survey ME.

Hahaha.

I used to live in Chicago and I can say be VERY WEARY of taking the winter supplies out of the car. Removing the scraper is a sure way to get one more snowfall. We used to feel safe about, oh, July, when the humidity was at 100%. ;-)

I agree with PooinBaby - I have a high bed (with box spring) and it's SO luxurious-feeling. I finally got a padded headboard and we saved mucho dinero not going with the side rails. (I don't think slats were even an option from Ethan Allen?) Our master would feel really under-furnished with a low bed though, it's fairly large/long. Back in my city days I had a more modern aesthetic. I think Mad Men got me wanting something more traditional.
