Sometimes dull, but much better than most of the hodgepodge gallery walls I frequently see in these posts.

Gallery Wall Inspiration: 10 Examples of Frames Hung on a Grid

As one of my landscape architecture professors repeated almost daily, how things begin and end is key to the success of a project, and how the backsplash ends isn't handled well on the pantry wall. You have three options:

1) Remove the backsplash from the pantry wall;

2) Extend the backsplash to the door trim and down to the baseboard, which which will require replacing it with a larger piece of glass; or

3) Color block the wall with a matching color, from the top line of the backsplash down to the floor.

Aesthetically, the second is the best option, but the third would probably look good, too, and would be much easier/cheaper.

Trim, shelves, an awkwardly hung painting above the backspalsh, and other doodads aren't going to address the problem.

Unless the law of conservation of energy is being violated, energy in the form of heat is still required to evaporate water from laundry hung on a rack indoors in the winer. You're just not as cognizant of the indirect source of this energy or its cost: your furnace.

I've had higher end cabinets--Poggenpohl, Siematic, Downsview, and Boffi--and now, as a grad student, Ikea for the past year and a half that I installed myself. Only Americans seem to be hung up on the idea of wood--really plywood--carcases and solid wood doors. As a designer at Siematic told me years ago, unless you're expecting your kitchen to flood, there's no difference. I went with Ikea when I was doing my latest kitchen remodel because the carcases and door hardware reminded me so much of Poggenpohl's and, well, they're cheap and stylish. If only I could afford a Dornbracht faucet for my Ikea apron sink on my graduate student stipend....

Nice stairs, but I agree with BlueWillow. I don't think they're to code.

@3dogma LOL My boy Angus--who usually has the best house manners--lifted his leg on a friend's birch bark-covered umbrella stand. I shudder to think of a stump in the house for that reason.

I have always wanted to like her cookbooks and recipes--I own The Savory Way and Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and have eaten at Greens--but more times than not I've found them to be disappointing. Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian, on the other hand, is a great cookbook for everyday cooking.

In addition to being hideous, the room makes no sense to me, from the floor lamp in the corner by the TV to the shelves with bits of pipe sticking up and down to the rustic bench that's half on, half off the rug. I love to lean to the right while I'm supping my miso soup.

I find lots to like on AT, but not this inelegant and poorly designed room.

@ginnielizz A DIY project with a bleach bottle! That must have been a very hasty glance.

I made my own round table for a small breakfast nook in my kitchen. I married the base of an accent table--painted gloss white--to a top that I routed out of MDF and painted with multiple coats of white gloss oil enamel. The result was superb: inexpensive and sturdier/better looking/better wearing than either the Docksta or the Odyssey table from CB2.

I usually paint them the same color as the walls, too, but I've also seen them--on some design website--painted black to match the window trim, which I thought was amazing looking.

I would go dark, not light. I once used Morning Coffee from Benjamin Moore in a small powder room with white trim. Dark walls can make a small, bland space seem large and warm.

I'd also get rid of that light above the mirror. Ugh!
