I suggest rerouting the stairs: create a landing a couple of feet below ceiling level and then make a 90 degree turn right. You'll have a cozy nook in front of the fireplace.

this is cool, max, but really, it needs a railing. your daughter could easily roll off and break her arm (or worse), especially since the footprint is quite small -- there's not that much room to maneuver.

The SInger 4411 (I have the 4423, which is similar), is one of two old-school, heavy-duty machines that I use for production sewing. I love them because they're dependable, fast, heavy (I ride 'em hard), and inexpensive. I have had one of them for 25 years and it's still going strong.

just be aware that you'll need to handwash these in gentle laundry detergent i.e. Woolite, and even then expect some fading. that's the nature of spoonflower's printing inks.

i have tried this... the problem i've been having is that condensation forms between the fabric (wet with dye) and the transparency (warmed by the sun). so i get little white spotches. i've tried taping the transparency down -- doesn't help. maybe this can only be done on a cold, clear day?

Things start getting ridiculous every 6 months or so, and then it's time to sort and recycle. I keep design-related magazines for two years (by then I've revisited each of them several times and ripped out pages to file). National Geographic and Smithsonian -- pretty much forever. They're like classic novels, they never get old.

My mother and I have a running joke about magazine hoarding -- creative things to do with old magazines, i.e. furniture, building foundations, ship's ballast.

I don't love it. The color (very dark gray-brown?) doesn't work with the fireplace and furniture. But I'm glad YOU love it and hope you have fun with it until you're ready to install new flooring. I, too, had water damage and had to pull my carpet up. I ended up installing Pergo and it's great -- wish I'd done it years ago.

nothing beats a polar fleece blanket. i make a couple of new ones every year: two layers of non-pilling (important) fleece. they get used every day, except for the warmest part on the year, then the dog or the animal shelter gets them. cozy!

I like everything except the hideous anything-but-modern lawn and landscaping. It makes the building look like a sports complex next to a soccer field!

I use shrink-wrap plastic in my single-pane windows, it makes a HUGE difference. I also hang a heavy curtain across the opening to the hall and keep it closed during the day, when no one is in the back of the house. I have a metal front door (metal conducts heat and cold), and I'm thinking of making a heavy curtain to pull across that, too. All three beds have heated mattress pads: it's usually enough to turn them on for just ten minutes to warm things up (except when it's REALLY cold!) And I make three or four new, double-thickness polar fleece blankets every year; we use 'em like crazy, then give 'em to the dog.

Simple Solution works really well. I have a small area in the yard where my dog goes when we can't get him out for a walk. I buy Simple Solution in gallon jugs and once in a while I pour out about a cup and sprinkle it over the spot.

Simple Solution is also great for stinkiness in the house, like dog vomit (our dog has a nervous stomach). Use the spray bottle for this.

We have the cat poop problem (neighborhood cats, darn them) and I'm intrigued by the coffee grounds suggestion.

We're crazy pesto freaks, so we wash and prep a lot of basil and other pesto-friendly herbs.

We just converted to all laminate, which we love, but now we have to clean the floor every day (esp. stray cat litter and sandy soil tracked in from the garden).
