I used a flat sheet to make a curtain to cover an ugly open pantry area in my apartment kitchen, then I had enough leftover to make a curtain for the one window in there.

I do this always upon move in because it seems they are almost always discolored, chipped, etc. Not necessarily unsanitary, just ugly. The most recent one (where we just moved 2 months ago) was clean, but super thin plastic that was discolored to a nicotine yellow. In my area at least, WalMart sells a wood composite seat for about $5 so it's a cheap fix!
