I lived in a student rental that used to be a farm house but was now surrounded by 50's war cottages. A lot of random things from previous tenants such as 90s computers. But one day we decided to brave the attic. There was a table in there that would not have fit in the attic access (original access with square cut nails), a crystal wall scone, a box with some research I discovered was for an enamel hair brush set, and creepily a leather medical wrist restraint. I also found a scyth in the backyard which I kept.

I buy a lot of things off Craigslist (or rather Kijiji, the Canadian equivalent). I have never had problems. That being said, you have to go see the furniture, the house; cleanliness means nothing to bed bugs or any other critters really, unzip the cushions, look under the cushions, ... You also have to trust the people that your buying things from that they would throw out infested things, if you don't trust them, by all means don't it from them. I recently bought a couch on Kijiji and instead of buying a neutral coloured couch from people trying to make there couch seem like the best in the world, I instead decided to buy a couch from a couple that admitted that the couch was older but clean, and the mattress of the sofa bed needed to be replaced. To me trust is most important.

Also steam cleaning won't kill bed bugs since the foam is so thick. It is however a good idea to have it steam cleaned to get any stains out, and the smell of the other persons house out (I don't know if it's just me, but it doesn't feel like it's mine unless it smells like nothing or my house).

I agree it doesn't make sense in Canada or colder areas. But then again, why bother with a hot water tank when you can get a on demand hot water heater that (depending how much water you need) fit over the wasted space over the toilet or under the kitchen sink!

I guess it works for some people, especially for an industrial design. For me personally I don't like it and it reminds me of spider legs. Urgh.

I'm actually looking to do the same thing with a second hand couch I bought, my problem though is that its a pull out so it's more complicated. Definitely look into painters drop cloths from Home Depot. But most of these are 100% cotton and will shrink an alarming amount, so wash before even thinking of sewing and cutting!

I'm a student so I need to have suitcases on hand. I put mine under my bed. Duffel bags are easier to store then hard plastic suit cases since they collapse and can become almost flat.

I had baseboard heaters which I could control. It actually was too bad (most people say it was hot, but then again I'm constantly cold so I was comfortable), what I really wish I had was a humidifier and a ceiling fan. It was very dry and there was no air movement. April 1st the buildings turn off the heat, then it was cold, and we could do nothing about it.

Also if your selling things online, whether expensive or not, dont post your address!! Many websites such as Kijiji (Canadian equivalent to Craigslist) do not need your full address. An address with pictures of expensive things or expensive things in the background (ex: if your selling your couch and the flat screen is visible in the background) is an open invitation for burglars.
Also be mindful of who you let into your home, as was stated in the article about door-to-door salesmen (false repairmen, false religious "good news" bringers) , ...

What about folding up a duvet in an extra large pillow case (probably would have to make it). It would also store the duvet away if you have a sofa-bed, but limited closet space and add extra seating.

The bottom drawer of my dresser is designated for clothes I dont wear but dont want to get rid of or I'm not sure about. If it stays there for one year (or one season depending what it is) I get rid of it guilt free.

@Rucy: My garlic lasts well over a year in the fridge with only the odd clove going bad from time to time towards the end of that year. Same with small yellow onions.
And I use broccoli stems like a cooking vegetable. Just make sure to peel it since the outer skin is chewy and stringy.

Sprinkle coffee grounds around your porch, in your flower beds, or anywhere else they hang out. Cats (racoons, squirrels, skunks) hate the smell of coffee and will usually leave the area alone. As a plus, its also great for most plants!
