I'm curious how some of these posters define and segregate pets vs livestock? Do they not all need care, companionship, compassion, things to keep them interested and engaged. They all have feelings and needs. They are not just products for your use and amusement. They are commitments not disposable "things" you use and use up. Pros & Cons of Raising Backyard Chickens |

And I adored my rescued rooster before he got taken by a hawk. He would run and jump into my arms and then snuggle down for a nap, purring all the while. Pros & Cons of Raising Backyard Chickens |

MY Chickens are pets. They have personalities and want care and affection just like any other animal we care for. Animals that are "farmed" by humans are NO different than any others - and those who try to define them differently are those who typically abuse and use them. As someone who has 3 rescued hens, I would HEAVILY weigh the cons. I love our hens but buying chicks from a mail order site or local garden store is awful. Tons of baby chicks die in transit or get killed. Plus you could end up with all roosters, like my friends. They poop a lot, require warmth in the winter, fresh greens and a good amount of space to roam and scratch. We have a very secure coop and yard and yet we lost one hen to a possum and one to a hawk. Be ready to be attracting raccoons, possums and cats as they will eat the feed, eggs and your birds if they get the chance. I had a dog attack our rooster and we ended up billing the owner $700 in vet bills... once you find a vet that will take care of them at all. Pros & Cons of Raising Backyard Chickens |

We keep one that includes all of the major items and remodeling items we did when we first moved into our home. It came in super handy for trying to order additional blinds (I have the original fabric swatch to match to) and getting a replacement kitchen sink faucet sprayer (lifetime guarantee!) 7 years later. Throwing your butts in the street is equally gross and a huge peeve about smokers. Great. I get to see your litter all the time everywhere. Just one example of rudeness. I live in a semi-rural area and people throw their butts from their car windows into my lawn. I've never seen a smoker go out of their way to put out their butts in their car ashtray or in a can, if they can just throw them in the street. And those thing take forever to breakdown. Help! Smoking is disgusting. You should quit. It's pervasive and offends the air, your clothes and seeps through walls - so you are offending and endangering people in the general vicinity. And just having had two relatives die from lung cancer in the past year, I just don't think it's a harmless habit that's just about you. Help! I think a electric kettle would be a good add too, for oatmeal or instant grits or hot chocolate. For a rug, we actually went to a carpet store and bought a large remnant. It wasn't bound on the edge but we cut it to fit the room and it was cheaper than a rug. I just tossed it after that year. Don't forget to get at least 2 - 4 stackable, non-breakable plates, glasses and silverware for in-room dining. My freshman year roommate and I also coordinated our colors so our room looked good. I had pink and white bedding and she had pink and black. We couldn't nail into the walls so we used the sticky hooks for hanging stuff. 10 Must-Have Dorm Room Essentials Back to School 2012 |

I fell from the top of our stairwell straight to the bottom (wood stairs) while holding my dog. I didn't drop him and basically went down the whole way on my back/butt. I think carpeted stairs are safer but we haven't installed any yet. Slipping, Sliding & Safety: Carpeted vs. Wooden Stairs |

I would never travel anywhere with my dog that I would have to put him in a crate and not be able to take him into the plane with me. Airlines have horrible track records and it's not safe or comfortable with the dogs. We'd rather drive 12 hrs (and have) or more to our destination rather than "check" our dogs like luggage. I too find a lot of these crates disturbing. Ours use a well ventilated standard wire crate with two cushions in the bottom. And our dogs are never in there more than 4 hours. Some of these are scary! Raise the Woof: Stylish Modern Dog Crates for Small Spaces |

Bar soap is the way to go. We buy from a vendor at our farmer's market - local and minimally packaged. I'd hate having another bottle in the shower for me to drop. We only use a coverlet/quilt - no top sheet - year round. We wash it a bit less but wash our bottom sheet and pillowcases weekly. And bath sheets are best investment ever. I insisted on getting them when we moved and love love love them! Going to visit others and stay in hotels now seems like a step down. People who come to stay with us feel totally pampered with them. Our library is where we house all of our treasures - from antique Chinese cricket cages, to primitive horse statues to a really foxed out old unframed mirror. But I also have some newer items like a sculpture made from colored pencil tips which looks like a rainbow sea urchin and an amazingly delicate and fragile glass spider from Venice, both of which have homes nestled among our fine china and crystal.
