WOW! Thanks for all the comments and I especially love the LED on the beams idea. I don't think I clarified the height of this room. It's never felt short in there. The walls are 111" tall. Those horrible white orb thingys? are some of the cheapest ikea-esque paper lanterns. The previous owners seemed to like paper lights as they're in a couple of rooms.

As for the kitchen, that will be redone as soon as I can...probably not as fast as I'd want to since kitchens are expensive.

Gray walls were something I was definitely thinking about and it's nice to be reassure that I was heading in the right direction. Other ideas I really want to try was the mantel and darker furniture. I'm seriously appreciative of all the help you guys have given me so far and I hope when it's all said and done I'll have my own house tour featured! Fingers crossed!

What Color To Paint Legs on Hollywood Regency Chairs? Good Questions

crash course in color theory

primary colors (all colors come from combinations of these): red, yellow, blue
secondary colors (made from combining the above): orange, purple, green
tertiary colors are secondary ones that lean one direction or the other. Like green blue or green yellow

warm colors: reds, oranges, yellows
cool colors: blues, greens, purples

so now I can try to clear things up but using the color purple as an example...
purple on it's own is a secondary color (can be considered cool or warm) but with the addition of blue or red it would still be purple but one "warms" the color (red) while the other "cools" it off (blue). Every color has these primary and/or secondary colors as a base so figuring out the base of the color you seek and the desired effect you can eliminate many bad choices right off the bat. Having a color wheel on hand...even if it only has the primary colors can help you find what you're working with and how to proceed. This technique also works with clothes...Have you ever seen someone wear two colors together that seem like they shouldn't work but do? They most likely share a common base.

Tinting, toning and shading a color changes it's attributes futher.

Tinting a color is adding white...your pinks and baby blues for example
Shading is adding black for your navy and goldenrod
Tone is adding gray...those pleasing tones most people like to use live here...the robin egg blues and periwinkles

I hope this helps you navigate thru the sea of swatches...it's easier to pick if you know where you're trying to go

4 Things To Consider When Picking A Wall Color
7/6/12 4:54 AM

I find it funny how many people have come in trying to defend their nick nacks...the "I have a vintage X but I do like to X". It's fine if you have those things but that NEED to try and defend what you put in your home to anons on a decorating blog is proving this blog's point. Everyone else's opinion of someone's stuff matters WAY too much these days...not to mention the constant need of the internet masses for approval and validation drives this kind of behavior. Why are people in this thread even worrying that their beloved items may be labled trendy?

Being "quirky" and "unique" has become super formulatic like the ever expanding "indie-esque movie" genre. Just find some random items that your standard person would consider junk and some feminine/masculine/overly cute additions in juxtipostion equals appothcary jars with bones and a pink bow on etsy. In the case of movies: ackward couple + problems that aren't really problems in a city no one cares about is indie gold. If you like your cardboard deer head fine...honestly I think they're cute but if you only bought it so your chevron wall will be complete in time for your blog update? ....probably propping but hey...at least all these proppers can compare how well their originality ranks to identical rooms on rival blogs.

one more thing...please stop the pigeon toed, hipster pics of heart hands...it's not as cute and ironic as you think

*end rant*

I've tried thumping them but my problem is the overly squishy parts inside the fruit...I like mine on the firmer side even to the point of eating slightly under ripe ones but I haven't found a fool proof method to avoiding the unseen mush inside. The last one I bought I had to cut off about 1/5-1/4 of the fruit because of this.

Maybe I missed it but I still haven't seen any of the seasoned veterns tell of what to do if you end up with a rooster. I had a local pet shop tell me if I bought chicks and one ended up being male they would take it back for store credit...while that sounded "thoughtful" of the pet store it also seemed shady...what would a pet store want with guaranted roosters since most want hens?

Personally, I like these full wall units...especially the example. A single tv stand tucked in a corner feels like an after thought or a "lets put it here because we have no where else it can go". I like that with a wall unit...everything has it's place...even the tv. It doesn't stand out with the cabnets above and below or all around. It feels neat and tidy to me. However, I do hate those tv cabnets that look like a giant standing jewelry box. Feels like a giant elephant in the room that everyone pretends is cleverly hidden behind huge, solid wood doors.
