I would use a coat of Penetrol on the exterior. Penetrol is a an additive for oil-based paints however many people who work with metal and want to preserve the patina of the piece use it. I just used it on the exterior of a vintage medical cabinet I am re-finishing. It will give the piece a bit of a glossy finish however that seems to become less shiny over time. Additionally, you can do extra coats if needed.

My boyfriend and I live together and his mother is currently visiting us for a month and a half. She is a wonderful, smart, fun woman but it can be difficult as I have a job that requires me to be friendly and accomodating to my many business partners every single day and it can be challenging to have to be "up" at home as well. Additionally, we are the only ones she knows well in town and so when we are home we are always together and showing the sights of the city. Additionally, we only have one useable shower right now and so that is inconvenient to say the least. I thought I was being a selfish beast but seeing these other comments helps - a bit.

I have white painted pine plank in an upstairs bedroom and absolutely love it. The flooring was original to the 1904 house but did not match the nicer, more finished flooring in the more public spaces of the home. While we did refinish the master bedroom flooring the two smaller bedrooms we choose to paint: one room with white floors and the other with an industrial looking, mid-tone gray. Some important points to consider, I did prime the floors prior to painting (I used Zinsser BIN which is a shellac-based primer) and then with the white floors I used an oil-based paint. Yes, oil based paint is cumbersome to work with however I have not had any issues with peeling, scuffing or yellowing. I painted the floors approximately three years ago and they still look very clean and fresh. Additionally, I have no fears of wet mopping them which is something I would not do with hardwood floors. I use the room every day and have three cats. Cat fur is the biggest offender in making the floors seem less than pristine but for the price I could not be happier.

I moved into my new (old, circa 1904) home in December of 2008. The home had been a foreclosed property and while structurally sound suffered from issues of "deferred maintenance" and aesthetic insanity. For the last two years we have been slowly working on making the house our home. I just completed painting all of the kitchen cabinets this past week and re-attached the doors last night - while not a technically difficult process it was laborious.

Through the course of these two years we painted the walls, ceiling, and cabinets. We purchased a new sink, faucet and plumbing (the old ones were in disrepair and not salvagable); we have replaced the industrial-style fluorescent lights (mounted to the walls mind you, NOT the ceiling) and in the coming weeks will be replacing the chipped, stained formica countertops with Ikea Numerar countertops. The entire budget for all of this... less than $1,000.

I can't understand how anyone would argue that a budget of $500 is somehow extravagent. By the time we are finished with our kitchen "remodel" we will have spent twice that amount however if one divides that amount over the span of two years it comes to less than $42 a month. I know people that spend more than that for their cell phone or cable bills.

I think it looks charming, sweet and fresh Edgaroso! It respects the original character of the kitchen and I am sure your grandparents would be delighted

@Holy MoLi, the paint color I used was Benjamin Moore's Sidewalk Gray. It's a nice, complex gray and doesn't seem as quite as cool and clinical as some grays can.
@jpl1173, I actually purchased the painting from the artist himself (he was having a "moving sale" at his house and people were actually waiting at the door when we arrived - and we came early). You can read more about him here -

Does anyone know where the red, hanging light fixtures come from or where one might find something similar?

I have one of these toliets in my 1920s-era apartment and it is actually one of my favorite features of the bathroom. I am lucky in that I have the original white hexagonal tile and subway tiles.

I love the fact that it makes the room seem more spacious than a tank toliet and it's "industrial" nature works with my tile. Additionally, it flushes better than any other toliet original to an apartment of this vintage.

I played up the toliet's "non-domestic" qualities by painting the walls with a subdued silver (the metallics line by Ralph Lauren found at Home Depot). I also purchased a more industrial looking toliet seat (the stainless steel toliet seat called "Racken" from Ikea). With the addition of stainless steel accessories (toliet roll holders, toothbrush holders, shelving, etc.) it can be a very cool feature and not an eyesore.

I also think this could be pretty in a sewing/craft room. One could hang folded fabrics (perhaps the same pattern but different colorways) from the branch.

I'm curious if anyone knows where the Owl pillow comes from? The rendering is so perfectly "storybook illustration."

I actually have the black wrought-iron Lillesand bed from Ikea. While the online photos make the headboard and footboard appear to have "Alice in Wonderland"-like proportions (being extremely tall and similar to the bars of a jail) with a mattress and boxspring it is perfect.

The Lillesand bed is the single most sturdy and well-made thing I have ever purchased from Ikea. It is a nice blend of vintage and modern and goes well with my antique dresser and contemporary, abstract art.
