Ditto everyone here. My dad has been type 1 since he was 14 and takes two injections a day. If only sugar was the only thing to think about!

He's at the age where the first sugar substitutes were saccharine (blegh) but he's been through them all. Now he pretty much just avoids anything sweet.

I find as long as meals are balanced (fiber, protein, vitamins/minerals and a small amount of carbs), it's all good. I know that doesn't sound scientific but it works. He's yet to leave my house either needing a sugar hit or more insulin.

So cute! You've done well in such a small space. Personal touches without being cluttered. As a fellow Vancouverite, I'm dying to know where this is. My guess is the West End or The Drive.

Re: mangoes, I also buy the Ataulfos (the other ones just don't seem mangoe'y enuogh to me). It took me awhile while I was in Nicaragua in March to recognize that it wasn't furry nuts I was seeing all over the streets, it was mango pits!

I love all these crazy things people do. Before I was vegan, I would purposely put too much cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich so it would ooze out the sides and get all fried and crispy. Now I still do the "lick the beaters" etc when making baked goods.

If any of you haven't, I think you'd all enjoy Tamar Adler's "an Everlasting Meal" where she talks about things just like this. It's where I discovered making a pesto from leftover broccoli stalks!

I haven't, though I've seen an acupuncturist for other things, so I'm not adverse to natural/alternative methods to solve problems.
Sweat-proof sunscreen doesn't even stay on me, if that's any indication. :)

Oh yes, God is onto something!

Ours was converted into storage-a blessing.

In our old house, we had a desk under there.

Very informative! Have any or you that use this natural method, had to use prescription deodorant? I sweat like a monster and worry that the natural method wouldn't be effective.
But I'm defiantly curious about trying it now! I have all the ingredients for cold process soap-making so it's not like I'd have to go and buy things.

I also buy mine at Costco, for much less, and the first poster says.

I use it all the time in baking and also use it for curries that require some sweetening. A bonus is that it apparently has a lower GI rate than regular sugar.

If you really want to share the bedroom, it will have to be twin beds with some sort of wall/bookshelf/wardrobe between the two of you.

As others say though, it's really difficult to know what to suggest without dimensions OR info on the rest of the place.

Two good friends of mine were best friends. They lived with me for a year, moved back and forth out of the city, and at various times, shared a studio with a queen bed. They are still best friends, and are each now married with kids. So, it can be done! I wish you luck!

I'm totally with the "don't ask people what they do for a living" question. Seriously, there are so many more interesting things to find out about a person than what they do for a living. That and my husband and I BOTH have jobs that nobody even understands what we do, not even our families. IE-the question doesn't lead anywhere.
Add to that, you can almost see people doing calculations in their head about how much you make or assessing your status. If someone asks me that, I'll politely answer but probably move onto the next person.

The usual:
How do you know the hosts?
What do you do for fun?
What's your next holiday/where are you going next?
Did you grow up here?
Have you seen the latest art exhibit/movie/concert (depends on what's going on where you are from)?
If there's music playing, it's easy to comment on that.
Sports-if you know people are into them, it's an easy open on either a team in town or the game played last night (I'm a girl who's big into sports).

As a host, I do my best to introduce people to each other AND come up with something they have in common so that they have the icebreaker planted right in front of them. From there, it's up to them to continue.

These are all such great ideas!

I would also love an outdoor kitchen (I drool watching house hunters international when they're buying somewhere warm and can justify it).

I remember being fascinated with dumbwaiters as a kid. I had always read about them in Nancy Drew novels but have never seen one.

Secret room-check!

I also really like the Central American style (and probably other places I haven't been to) of having a relatively non-descript front door. From there, you walk into an amazing outdoor courtyard, usually with some water feature, maybe even a pool, and the rest of the house is around the courtyard.

I do if it's for something important, like my husband's birthday last year.
Each person/couple (50+ people!) I sent an e-mail to, thanking them for coming and letting them know how much it meant to my husband that they came. Then another line that was more personal like "he'll really enjoy such-and-such" you brought for him or "can't wait to see you at such-and-such".

Very little effort but I feel it's appreciated.

I'm starting to feel better about drink prices here in Vancouver now.
Like the poster in Quebec said, we pay an amazing amount of taxes on our alcohol here. (We regularly go to Seattle and gawk at liquor prices in the US).

I don't really drink cocktails, so it's hard for me to say with certainly, but a an average place with a decent bar here will average about $12-$15 for a cocktail (though I've certainly seen it cost more).

As I'm not a cocktail person, $12 would be my limit. But that's easy for me to say because I prefer wine and can get a glass of wine for between $8-$12.

I should say that the house was built in 1970, so not old by any means.

We had exactly the same things growing up. Though I'm totally confused as to why. The house was only 10 years old when we moved in. Had 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. You'd think with that much square footage and plumbing, it would be obvious that more hot water would be needed AND that flushing a toilet in one bathroom and showering in another was a distinct possibility.
